Turn Your Home into a "Green Home"

Prices are going up for almost everything today.  We need to learn ways that we can save money and help the earth.  That is why the most popular ways today for making your home an energy efficient home is done by a few simple steps that anyone can do and you benefit from it immediately.  Turn your home into a Green Home.

Knowing about the ways that cost more money and destroy the earth can help you learn about all the ways to change it.  Today we have no other choice but to rely on ourselves to change our environment for future preservation.  When you choose to take measures to reduce costs in your home, you can feel good about how much you are helping yourself and everyone else.  This helps you save on cost of living and helps everyone everywhere.

The most important task of turning your home Green is to save on your heating bill.  In order to do that you will need to do a few extra steps while getting your home ready for winter.  Go around your home inside and outside and find little holes or openings that may allow the cold weather to sneak in.  The most obvious place to look is under the doors and around windows where air can come into the home.  This cool air will find its way to your thermostat which will kick your furnace on.  Even though the rest of your home is comfortable it may heat up the home even more.  In order to help the cool air stay out of your home, you may want to use a door stopper.  These can be purchased or made by hand.  To make a door stopper, cut a piece of material that is long enough to fit the length across the bottom of your door.  It needs to be wide enough to fold over and stitch up.  Sew three sides and leave the last side to stuff the door stopper.  Stuff the door stopper with stuffing, newspaper, material, fine gravel, rice or anything that you can use that you have around the home.  Sew that end up and you are done.  Place it in front of your door to stop the cold air from entering.

Prepare your fireplace for the winter.  There are several different things that you can do to keep the cold from entering your home, including through your fireplace.  You may not realize that the cold air can also enter the home through the fireplace if the damper is left open. Make sure that you close the damper when the fireplace is not in use.

Appliances that are in your home may not be energy efficient if they are over 10 years old.  When it is possible replace these appliances with modern appliances. The newer appliances use less energy to run which can mean a big savings for you. These appliances may include the refrigerator and the dishwasher.  If you don’t have a dishwasher or you don’t use your dishwasher now, you may be glad to know that using a dishwasher will help you save money because it minimizes the amount of water that is used.

Anytime that you can save money around the house you are living green.  To get started now is a great time to prepare for winter.
