Tips for Decorating Kids’ Rooms
Kids should have a room that is bright and invites curiosity. There are many ways in which you can decorate a kid’s room – from themed décor to colorful or educational décor. These tips can help you turn your child’s room into an oasis of learning and fun.
Decorating a kid’s room is not always as easy as 1-2-3 or even A-B-C. While kids may have simple desires and may not show a huge interest in the decorating of their room, it is important that the room is designed to be versatile and as easily changed as the phases a kid will go through. A child who wears nothing but the color purple one day may not be able to stand the sight of the color the next day. Here are a few tips for helping you decorate a kid’s room:
Kids should have separate areas for playing, sleeping, and studying. This helps to separate the tasks so that kids know that when it is study time, it is not play time.
Preschoolers and toddlers should be surrounded by bright primary colors. Since kids change and grow so quickly, the best way to make this possible is by painting the walls a neutral color, such as white, and then adding touches of color throughout the room.
Large murals on poster board can be changed easily as the needs of your child change – and as your child grows, he/she can participate in creating these murals.
A colorful area rug is a great way to incorporate a little splash of color into the room – and also gives the child a cozy and warm place to play, color, or read. You can find rugs in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and themes.
Decorative shelving can add a little charm to a child’s room, as well as provide much needed storage space. As the child gets older, you can purchase unpainted shelves and let the child have a hand in the decorating as well.
One way in which to keep the room as versatile and ever changing as the child is to use inflatable furniture. Found in a variety of colors and designs, this furniture allows children to develop their own style and can be easily stored when most floor space is needed.
Preschoolers and toddlers will enjoy a large black board or white board, giving them a place to let their imaginations become a part of the décor. As the child grows older, the board can be raised and be a handy homework reminder or scrap paper for math problems. And, since most every child enjoys playing school more than they enjoy going to school, it is easy for them to create their very own classroom atmosphere.
One thing to keep in mind is that a child’s room should grow with the child. Some furniture is designed to grow with a child – for example, some cribs can be turned into toddler beds and then turned a larger bed as the child grows. Wood furniture is ideal for a child’s room because the colors and designs can be easily changed in order to keep up with the changes in the child.
Preschool children love to choose their own clothes each morning and dress themselves. One way to keep their clothes within easy reach is to place a rod for hanging clothes at their level. The rod can then be raised as the child grows.
