Thrifty Theme Decorating For A Kid’s Room

Every little kid would like a room that’s ‘different’ from everybody else’s. Depending on what they are into at the moment, boys are more likely to wish for a room that looks like a camp-site or a pirate ship or a Formula1 race track whereas girls are more likely to dream of fairy castles or a room that looks like it is fit for a princess.

Whilst it is easy to go to a home décor store and buy the whole set of matching sheets, comforters and curtains to achieve the theme look, it could be a very expensive affair.

More so since kids do tend to outgrow one particular theme and then clamor for something else before you know it. Why not do it yourself. A little imagination combined with a trip to the DIY or the hobby store will help you achieve the look-of-the-moment without rendering you bankrupt.

Here are two favorite theme rooms of rooms for children and how to create them yourself:

Camping Room for Boys

Little boys like the outdoors and camping is always fun. You can bring the outdoors right into the room by painting the walls sky blue and the walls in any earth tone. Painting clouds in the ceiling is not difficult – take a sponge and dip it lightly in white paint and dab over the ceiling randomly. Use a star-shaped stencil dipped in glow-in-the-dark paint to achieve a beautiful starry-starry sky so the boys can lie down and watch the sky at night. Lay a patch of Astroturf over part of the carpeting for extra effect.

You can either make a tent out of bed sheets and affix them to the ceiling, or get a cheap cub tent and place it in the room. Put some accessories like camping gear in the room and you have a camping theme room that any young boy would love.

Princess Room

Little girls like to be princesses. You can make your little princess feel special by giving her a pretty princess theme room. Get a lot of pink toile at the fabric store and make a canopy over the bed. You can use a staple gun to affix the toile into the ceiling and drape it around the bed.

You can also use the toile as part of your window treatment. The walls can be painted a pale pink and the toile a bright pink to give it a bit of contrast. Use accessories such as magic wands that are found in costume stores as wall ornaments. Your little girl will love her special princess room and this is a very inexpensive look to achieve.

The great thing about creating a thrifty theme room for your child is that you can continue adding to the room as your budget increases. While your kids may not want to have a camping or princess theme room when they are 18, they are sure to bask in the warmth of these fond memories even when they are long past18.
