The Egg Chairs Humble Start from the Hands of the Popular Arne Jacobsen

The modernism style in furniture design was divided into different styles since its beginning during the early 20th century, and among the most wonderful of these is the Danish Modern Style. Highly famous during the 1940’s up to the 1960’s this typical style was recognized by its use of light materials (such as wood), simple construction, and fine craftsmanship influenced by thousands of years of Viking tradition. presently some Danish modern furniture are still being created with the most famous being the Egg Chair.

If one were to make up his mind to own only sole piece of Danish modern furniture, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair would be a good choice. Also namedplainly as the Egg, the Egg Chair is a leather-covered chair created by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The Egg was created to the reception and lobby parts of the hotel, and its rounded body was to balance the hard surfaces of the structure.

As with vintage Danish modern furniture, the 18-kg Egg Chair was equally light for its size. However, instead of customary wood materials the center of the chair is made from a light plaster shell filled with cold synthetic foam. This was soon after changed in latest models with lighter but strong glass fiber reinforcement and polyurethane foam. The body is coated with soft red leather upholstery, and filled with a base made up of of a welded steel swivel, a machined steel spindle, and a 4-star base completed from aluminum. Plus, the Egg also shows a simple tilt fitting mechanism that permits the chair to move according to the occupant’s height.

Because of its eccentric shape, the Egg Chair is said to make a little bit of privacy around the occupant and is often used in lounge and waiting areas for that reason. More currently, 50 “special edition” Egg Chairs were created by the Fritz Hansen furniture company, which is the one permitted producer of the design, and is presently on a worldwide tour to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
