Patio Cover Choices and Designs

If you're an avid DIYer, then you can appreciate the trend in home design to bring more living and livable space outdoors. This is what has spawned the term or concept of outdoor living. The name says it all, it is about bringing some of the same elements of interior design and creature comforts outdoors. The patio is a great place to enjoy your home and in many parts of the country, it can be used for many parts of at least 2 or more seasons. We'll explore more about the types of patio cover choices are available and how these help to ensure you have a comfortable space.

Whether or not you have children can affect the type of patio that you build. Think about how this might be true. When you have kids growing up, you want to sit around and watch them grow and play. They also need space to run. So, your backyard will need to incorporate these aspects. Then, there is also time to rest. The patio is a great 'landing area' for your weary kids and their friends. In other ways, the homeowner that wishes to entertain and host parties will have different needs for their outdoor space.

While we've talked about patios for each type of homeowner as sounding like distinct spaces, there are some more general overlapping ideas. The biggest of these has to do with shade. Shade, in one form or another, needs to exist in order to give your patio a place where you and your family or guests can find solace from the intense summer sun. While there will not be sun to worry about at your dinner engagements, it can still provide for a way to hang overhead lighting.

With a smaller patio area to shade, umbrellas can give you the desired amount of coverage on a budget. The most popular market umbrella styles are easy to move around and come in a variety of colors, fabrics and designs. You'll find that the umbrella does take up more floor space than other overhead outdoor shades.

Some of the more popular outdoor shade items include awnings and shades. Awnings are great for several reasons. One key aspect of an awnings is that it can be opened and retracted rather quickly and easily and stores away when not in use. This keeps it protected and safe from the effects of poor weather. Also, the awning will not take up your precious patio floor space when opened.

When we look to stand-alone or free-standing styles of the patio cover, then we must include in our discussion the design elements of the pergola. This is a classic piece of patio building history that has a very simple design giving it a very flexible nature. Flexible in terms of use, not strength. Pergolas, classically, have an open roof made of a post and beam type of design. This provides for some shade of its own and also allows vines and plants to grow up and over it, giving you a living roof. It provides additional cooling and a nice sense of ambiance to your patio space. Built well, the pergola can last many many years and give you and your family years of enjoyable outdoor living.
