How to Perform Minor Repairs on Jewelry Boxes For Women
There are times when handcrafted elegant jewelry boxes for women are treasured more than the jewelry itself. When it is used frequently then some minor problems may arise like the lid may not shut properly or a screw or nut becomes loose or even a latch is broken. To do minor repairs on your jewelry box you may not be able to go to a carpenters shop.
By using the right tools you can do small repairs by yourself. You need to first get all the stuff you need for your repair work. A hardware shop will have all the things you need, so get some tacks, sand paper, varnish, turpentine, and a small sized paint brush.
Make sure to buy small sized tacks coated in silver and gold. Your repair work will look original. If you find that the box is shaking and not seated properly, then adjust it and fix a few bigger tacks and hammer it down. This should fix it. When you place tacks make sure it is not visible or get fancy tacks where the head is shiny and decorative.
You could just polish the nuts and handles to make them look shiny and new or replace them with new ones. When polishing the nuts and handles use a good polish. You can also buy a can of shining colored polish and keep it handy. These cans are ready to use and you will regain its shine within a few minutes.
Sand the box using sand paper. Use the correct sand paper depending on the type of wood your jewelry box is made of. Make sure you sand the box thoroughly not missing the designs, and the crevices in the design. If there are ready made varnish sprays then mix the varnish with a small portion of turpentine and give the box a light coat. The brush should be able to reach all the difficult spots.
After the first coat dries give it a thicker second coat and allow it to dry. When the second coat is dried completely, then the nut and the handles can be fixed with a screw driver taking care not to tighten it too much as it may crack if force is used. After this is done then give your jewelry box a final coat of glossy varnish.
It will look beautiful if you do it meticulously. The most important and final step is fixing the worn lining of your jewelry box. A lining of suede or thick velvet could be bought to give it a striking look. A satin lining could also be bought, but the bottom of the box should be padded with a layer of sponge before the satin is fixed. It would only then be fixed properly and firmly.
Measurements of the inside of the box should be taken before you start the job. Measure the outside after that only then you will know how much of lining you need to fold in. Apply a strong coat of adhesive and wait for a few minutes to dry before you place the material on it This adhesive application is to seat the lining and to give it a neat look.
The lining can be placed and fixed in the box with the corners folded. When you fix the tacks hold each corner tightly and create a tension with the material to give it a neat look. Your jewelry box will look brand new and gorgeous!
Always remember you could do these minor repairs yourself instead of wasting time on waiting for some one to do it for you. You will also save a lot of money if you do the repairs and you can be proud of your handy work!
