Get Started On Home Décor – 6 Steps To Help You

Whether you are a first-time home owner or you just want to re-vamp your old-as-the-hills décor, deciding where to start can be a daunting task. Should you start with the walls or the floor? Should you leave them be and just tackle the smaller surfaces or should you only concentrate on changing your accessories and leaving everything else as it is?

Not everyone gets excited at the thought of doing up the entire house. Visions of a house with an entirely new look may be something to look forward to, but just the thought of what is involved can be daunting enough for most people to put it off for years. Here then are 6 suggestions to help you get started on home décor.

Organization is everything
Being organized and breaking up the whole home decorating project into smaller tasks will make it seem less scary and more manageable. Spend a few days making plans and taking notes. Measure your rooms, take precise measurements of awkward spaces and try and reflect on what you want and whether it is practical or not for your lifestyle. When you go out shopping, carry your notes as well as your measure tape so you know right away what will fit and what will not.

Set a Budget

It is easy to fall into the trap of over-spending when doing up the first few rooms and then realizing only too late that you’ve run out of funds to complete your decorating project. Set a realistic budget for the whole project and then allot funds for each room. If you do not have sufficient funds to undertake the entire project at one go; still make your plans, set your budget and then undertake each stage as and when more funds become available.

Analyze, Evaluate, Assess

Evaluating the shape and size of your room and deciding what the room will be used for will give you a better idea of how to decorate it. Decorating a large living which is a perfect quadrangle is in complete contrast to decorating a smaller family room that has more than 4 corners.

Light Up Your Rooms

An important aspect of home décor, the right lighting can enhance the décor of any room just as the wrong choice of lighting can detract from it. Use a combination of dimmers, up-lighting, table lamps and floor lamps to bring out the best in every room. Whereas a study may require brighter lights, your living room may look best when bathed in soft lights.

Color me perfect

You don’t have to go with any fixed rules or preconceived notions of color combinations. The only color rule you need to follow is; if you think it looks good, go for it. Just remember however, that light colors open up the room and make it appear more spacious whereas darker colors tend to close a room up.

Match Your Lifestyle

Your home décor should necessarily fit in with your life style. If you do a lot of formal entertaining, you’d have to approach the whole home decorating project differently than if your house was always full of kids. This applies to all aspects of home décor, whether it is choosing the color of the walls, choosing your flooring or choosing the type of furniture and other furnishings and accessorizing options. Do you have pets? Do take them into consideration when making your home décor plans.
