Sights, Textures, Flavors and Scents

It's funny-strange how a glimpse, a whiff, a taste or a touch can evoke memories of seemingly unrelated events and bring them rushing back in full color, texture, flavor and aroma.

This time it was at our usual beach barbecue when, from the corner of my eye, I caught the swoop of a gull as it plucked something out of the water just as I inhaled the pungent tang of sun burnt seaweed interlaced with the smoky sweetness of roasting meat, my toes curled graspingly at the sand, and my mouth full of rich chocolate cupcake.

I was instantly transported to a winter evening at a very rustic cabin in the mountains of Northern California. Clumps of snow would swoop from the roof on gusts of wind, the smell of burning pine wood in the fire place mixing with the aroma of roasting venison, my feet curled into the rough sisal rug in front of the fire and my mouth full of rich chocolate cake.

The rug was dyed a sea-blue, the pine wood floor was the pale yellow-with-reddish-brown-streaks of a beach and, with the lamb's wool blanket wrapped around me, I imagined then that there was a warm sea-breeze tickling my arms.

Minimalistic Design In Your Living Room Area

One of the most popular designs in home decorating these days is the minimalist look. As the name implies, the idea is not to overload the room with excess furniture, accessories, or colors. Simplicity is the name of the game. The minimalist look is often decorated with neutral colors along with symmetrical and geometric shape furniture. So how do you decorate your living room in a minimalist style?

1. Keep it simple. As already mentioned, the furniture should be simple, easy to assemble and not very flashy. This adds to the calming effect because you do not need too much and the end result is easy and pleasant to do the eyes.

2. Do not add anything unnecessary, like more décor. No one likes a room that resembles a junkyard. Therefore, stick to the basics and list down what you will just need in your living room like chairs, table, or sofa.

3. Select simple design pieces. In creating a minimalist living room, it is best suggested to keep things simple like plain white, black or beige colors in sofa and other living room decor.

Creating an Entertainment Room

When I was a kid, I always thought that having many televisions at home is fun. That it will keep you away from fighting with each other over a remote control because everyone wanted different things to watch. Somehow, it proved to be true and even lasted for many years, until my parents decided to create a home entertainment room a year ago.

The entertainment room eliminated all other existing televisions in the house, which helped in saving electricity consumption and paying more bills. A good entertainment room does not have to be huge in space, but should be enough to accommodate the immediate family members during small gatherings or simply when you want to bond with your kids and wife/husband on a lazy weekend afternoon.

It is of best interest of the family if the entertainment room can house one flat screen TV, DVD player, a good sound system, and gaming stuff for kids. The goal is simple: create a place in your home where the family can gather, bond and have fun together. And of course, to make it even more convenient, make sure to select a good couch you can place and add some nice bean bags for the kids slouch in while viewing their favorite movies. And finally, do not forget to place some rugs on your flooring, whether shag rugs or a carpet rug to magnify the beauty of the room.

Instant Room Makeovers

Is your room in dire need of a makeover? Don’t sweat over remodeling costs just yet. Most people put off updating their décor because they think it’ll cost a fortune, but that’s not always the case. Often, dull rooms are just a small change or two away from a new and improved look—and the best news is that you can do it on a budget. Here are some ways to give your room an instant makeover without breaking the bank.

A new paint job

Color is usually the first thing people notice about a room, so it makes a sensible start for a makeover. A change in color can completely turn your room around even if you don’t change anything else. Most rooms can be fully repainted for under $500 and finished in four days or less.

However, a change too drastic can be hard to pull off. If you’re not sure how much you want to change, consider keeping your current color and choosing a lighter or darker shade. Bring out the color with contrasting hues in your area rugs, pillow cases, or curtains.

Contemporary area rugs

If you’re going for a trendy look, modern area rugs are the way to go. Today’s rugs are designed to catch the eye with their bold colors, unusual patterns, and avant-garde designs. Choose a bright color if your walls are plain or neutral. Pink area rugs and red area rugs are some of the most popular choices these days; they go particularly well with browns, blacks and grays. For a more festive look, spread some colorful braided area rugs or kids area rugs around the house.

Zen-style elements

More and more people are getting into Asian themes, and it’s easy to see why. The calm, open feel of Zen homes is a fresh change from the sleek lines of modern design. You don’t have to build an entire Zen garden to get the same effect. What you can do is introduce these elements in little accessories, such as window treatments and room dividers. Start by giving your floor a natural feel using bamboo area rugs, seagrass area rugs, or other natural weaves. You can also use these materials in decorative pieces or even your furniture.

Slip covers

Furniture tends to get dated fast, so you want to be able to update them anytime. The best way to do this is with slip covers. Unlike upholstery, slip covers can be removed and replaced as you wish, so you can change your furniture to match your changing tastes. You can buy them off the shelf or have them custom-made—either is cheaper than upholstery. Have a supply of basic colors and designs, and some “fancy” ones for special occasions.

New accessories

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. If old paintings or drapes have lost their effect, put them away and replace them with a fresh new piece. Go for something that works with your décor theme. If your room is large and opulent, oriental area rugs can replace those old wall-to-wall carpets.

Decorating For the Music Man

My husband is a studio musician. He loves all things musical and can play keyboards, piano, banjo, bass guitar, harp and lute. I managed to get the home I wanted by ensuring it had a potentially acoustically perfect room with floor to ceiling windowed patio doors that overlooked our backyard to the canyon hills beyond. Not long after moving into our new digs, my husband was contracted as back up for a national summer tour. I decided this was the time to put together that acoustically perfect room.

After considerable research I managed to find a contractor willing to do the necessary tear down and installation of floating walls, ceiling and floor within the time constraints of my husband’s tour and the budget I had allowed. The room had to be enlarged encroaching on our family room space, and the configuration changed to provide angles that would deflect and absorb reverberating sound. The patio doors had to be replaced with custom made double-paned tempered glass cut to size to fit the new dimensions of the wall. Acoustic shutters were added to close over the doors.

One of Jake’s buddy’s was able to oversee the project and ensure the math was done correctly to create a sound proof “silent” room when the doors were shut, and an amphitheatre effect when open for entertaining. The final result was a rhombus with a ceiling that sloped from about eight feet at its lowest point to twelve where it connected with the outside wall. A six inch raised platform was added for the baby grand piano.

Having so thoroughly invested in the room’s construction I was determined to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. I decided on a natural forest maple hardwood floor, and felt a bold color on the walls was in order. In my mind’s eye the room was a warm pastel orange shade and it took some work on line to find the exact color I was looking for. I selected a pearl white for baseboards and shutters. I wasn’t gutsy enough to buy musicians’ chairs in the recommended pastel green but chose to accent the space with palms in enormous sea green pots. The piano and bench looked fantastic. Jake’s instruments were grouped on appropriate stands. Slippers in various sizes were placed by the door.

Something more was needed. I had neglected decoration for the walls. Jake did not like ego walls particularly although he had certainly earned the right to have one. Finally, I found the perfect solution. Area rugs! Area rugs on the walls! Why not? I was able to find hand tufted wool rugs with musical motifs in colors that worked and in sizes appropriate to the dimensions of the room. One rug was a stylized montage of guitars, and another musical notes. I even found two Warhol area rugs, one of Mick Jagger and the other of David Bowie. I had them securely mounted and the room was done.

The effect, particularly from the viewpoint of the patio was stunning. My husband said not a word when I showed him his new studio. He donned the slippers, and walked round it, touching the piano, the guitars, the woolen portraits on the wall, smiled happily and kissed me and that was all.

How to Make Your Décor Reflect Your Personality & Lifestyle

Chances are you’ll never be really happy or comfortable in a home that is decorated in keeping with the latest fad decorating trends. Instead your home décor should reflect your personality and your lifestyle; it should be a huge part of who you are.

Do you prefer the romance of the Victorian era or do you like the sleek contemporary look? Do you do love throwing cocktail parties or do you find your self hosting children’s parties more often?

Stay true to yourself and let your personality shine through in your home décor. While home décor books are a great source of inspiration, attempting to recreate that look in your home could be a disaster. Elegant houses with Persian rugs, carved furniture and priceless breakable antiques could be what nightmares are made of if your household consists of three growing children and two dogs.

Here are a few simple suggestions that will help you make the correct decorating choices that are true to your personality and fit in with your lifestyle.

Get Inspired

You can find a lot of inspiration if you just look around you. It could be a beach vacation that creates a longing to be by the sea or a vacation to a tropical island that makes you want to do up your home to look like a tropical paradise. On the other hand, perhaps you’ve always been more inclined towards straight, neat lines and pastel hues. Whatever it is your heart desires and whatever makes you happy and comfortable, stick with it and work around it to create your own personal haven.

Display your prized possessions

Do you have a special collection of prized possessions? Whether you collect fine crystal, toy trains or miniature Chinese tea pots; keeping them hidden away in boxes defeats the very purpose of the collection, which is to enjoy it. Go ahead and make a style statement by displaying your precious collections either enclosed in specially designed display cases or openly on specially constructed shelves.

A little bit of everything

So you travel a lot and have loads of souvenirs from across the world that you’d like to display. However, incorporating different types of décor into your home could result in a total mish-mash of styles. If that large silver Hookah you picked up during your travels in India does not fit in with your present décor style, why not create a small Indian corner that will set off the Hookah to best advantage. Get a small-sized Kashmiri area rug, place the hookah on it and hang a striking Indian picture above it. Direct a spotlight towards this corner to maximize the effect. If you’ve got a set of African bongos, place it on an African rug and place an African mask on the wall for the same dramatic effect

Too Busy to Fuss?

If you lead a life that involves going from soccer matches to ballet classes to hobby classes, get practical and forget about fussy home décor. Keeping it simple, fuss-free and easy to clean will free up a lot of time that you can spend doing the things you love doing rather than spending hours trying to keep the house looking neat, clean and clutter-free.

Enjoy the Journey

You can never really stop, take a step back and say, “There, that’s it. I’m done!” Decorating a home is an ongoing project that is never really finished. It is an ongoing journey that evolves and changes as you find newer likes and interests. Every time you find something new to add your décor you reveal a little more about yourself.

Decorating On a Budget: How A Few Changes Can Make a World of Difference

Tired of looking at the same old interiors but do not have the budget for a complete home decor make-over? You do not have to spend an enormous amount of money to decorate or redecorate your home. Just starting with one room and adding a few essentials in a few strategic locations can make a tired space look brand new. The most important elements in home décor involve color, interest and lighting.

Here are a few ideas to get you on your way to a brand new look, without having to stretch your budget to the maximum:

Add Splashes of Color with Pillows, Bright Curtains and Area Rugs

  1. Toss a couple of throw pillows of contrasting colors onto your neutral colored couch. Not only do throw pillows come in a wide palette of colors, they also come in an endless array of sizes and textures. Using one or two smaller pillows of the same color and one large pillow of a contrasting color adds a whole lot of punch to an otherwise boring sofa.
  2. Instead of using blinds for decorating your windows why not hang pretty curtains that tie back, framing the view of the outdoors. Curtains come in a variety of textures and colors to choose from. Just choosing curtains in a color that contrasts with your regular color scheme will add dramatic interest and make a world of a difference to every room.
  3. Whether your floor is carpeted, tiled, cement or hardwood, area rugs may be just what you need to bring out the rest of the colors in your rooms. Contemporary area rugs in green, blue, orange or yellow can brighten up your living room in an instant whereas bamboo area rugs and seagrass area rugs can transform your living room into a tropical paradise. Brightly colored kids area rugs will not only add color to your kid’s room but will also provide them with a place to wrestle and a place to nestle.

Add One or Two items for Interest Value

  • A piece of retro furniture such as a coffee table either from or made to look like it is from the 60’s or an unusual lamp stand with an antique-looking lamp placed in a corner can enhance the décor instantly.
  • Sculptures or pottery of different shapes and sizes strewn in different corners in groups depending on their theme make for interesting conversation pieces. For added effect, place your pottery groups on beige, white or black area rugs.

Add or take away Lighting

Lighting makes all the difference to the look of a room. A room where the lighting is stark and way too bright will make everything in the room look sterile and stark. On the other hand, a room that is dark and dreary can look like a cave.

Lighting can make or break a stunningly decorated space. Use bulbs that diffuse a warm glow for the best effect. Add a lamp in one corner of your living room to make that one great piece of art or furniture stand out.

Decorating on a budget sometimes means changing one thing at a time. Each one of these décor elements offers a dramatic change without putting you into debt.

Complete Your Southwestern Theme with Area Rugs

Country, modern, industrial, vintage, Victorian—there’s no shortage of options when it comes to home design themes. But one of the most enduring yet overlooked styles is southwestern décor. Characterized by sunset colors and images of the outdoors, southwestern homes evoke memories of simple yet comfortable living—the thematic opposite of many modern styles. And the best thing about it is that it’s easy to implement in any space, regardless of size, design or budget. You can turn your home into a southwestern haven with just a few key accessories, such as area rugs.

Rugs play a central role in southwestern design, along with other room fabrics like curtains and pillow covers. Today’s area rugs make it even easier to work into different themes, as they offer lots of variety in color, pattern, style and texture. And since they’re not permanent, you can move them around or mix them up until you find one that fits with your southwestern theme. No matter what your budget, lifestyle or personal tastes are, you’re sure to find the right southwestern rug. Here’s a quick buying guide to help you out.

Go for vibrant colors.

Southwestern colors are inspired by the colors of the desert and sunset. Red, yellow, orange, coral, and other warm colors often take center stage. But since these colors can be overpowering, modern designers use cooler like green, purple, and turquoise to balance it out. A good southwestern color scheme should have take one or two from both sides, with one as the primary color and the other serving as an accent.

The same rules apply to southwestern area rugs. Take your main color and look for a rug that either matches or contrasts with it. If you’re going for turquoise walls, for example, a rug in bright orange or blazing red provides a bold yet stylish contrast. On the other hand, a purple or green rug will carry the “cool” color theme well and create a smoother, more seamless look. The latter usually works for smaller spaces, as it helps extend the line of view beyond the walls.

Choose simple geometric prints.

Some patterns are immediately associated with the southwestern look: diamond chains, cactus prints, simple stripes and gradients. But southwestern rugs come in numerous other prints, and all of them can work just as well in your home. It’s really a matter of what looks good with your other design elements. You may not even need a patterned piece; if you already have lots of prints in the room, you may be better off with a solid-colored rug.

You can also go for something simple, such as the Dynamic Rugs Serenity 1004 red area rug. Featuring thick stripes and a gradient design, it combines vibrant reds and oranges with more mellow cream and beige, yet still maintains a smooth, unified look. The simplicity of the pattern also makes it suitable for contemporary homes that need a warm southwestern touch. Put it somewhere visible, such as a hallway or the middle of the living room, where the colors can be equally appreciated.

Stick to natural materials.

Southwestern décor is much like the country theme in that both lean heavily towards simple, natural materials. Wood and rattan are especially favored in southwestern homes, as they provide a sense of stability and structure while keeping with the home’s warm, welcoming feel. For your area rug, choose a natural fiber such as bamboo, jute or seagrass. Wool and cotton also work well, especially if you have plain wood floors that could use a bit of softness.

If your home gets a lot of foot traffic, consider investing in sisal area rugs. Sisal comes from the fibers of the agave plant, a type of cactus native to Mexico, Brazil and Africa. It’s the same material used for dartboards and heavy twine. Sisal rugs are extremely hard-wearing and require little to no chemical treatment, so they’re very environmentally friendly. They also have a smooth, sleek look that contrasts nicely with the soft surfaces commonly seen in southwestern homes.

Look for unique shapes and sizes.

Rectangular rugs may be traditional, but they’re definitely not your only choice. In fact, shaped rugs are practically tailor-made for southwestern décor: with their soft curves and subtle appeal, they make the perfect complement to the strong colors and patterns in the rest of the room. Some of the most popular shapes for southwestern rugs are round, oval, and octagonal.

Oval braided area rugs fit particularly well into the theme because of their bright color combinations. Often associated with country décor, braided rugs have a light, casual look that nevertheless grabs attention and brightens up the room. You can use them in doorways as a welcome mat, by your furniture, or in front of the fireplace where it can serve as a focal point.

Carpet is also made out of a number of materials like polyester, olefin, nylon, polypropylene or a mix. Each style and material have different benefits. Some styles like berber tend to resist traffic wear better than your standard cut pile. A nylon carpet wears better, but polyesters tend to clean better.

You can get better quality vinyls that have awfully detailed textures and colours to mimic the look of ceramic tile or you can select to save cash and go with a lesser quality floor. Selecting Perfect Flooring: Basic Guidelines

Decorating a home is a huge job, but for many, it is a pleasurable task. After all , home is where to heart is, and folk are willing to go through great expense and great effort to brighten their abode in that perfect style. As hardwood flooring makes a comeback in appreciation ( versus most rooms being covered with carpet as in up to date decades ), area rugs are also enlarging in appreciation. With this increase in demand comes a rise in supply, and in the choices available on the market today. With discounters offering great deals online and offline, big savings are also prevalent. How doyou select the perfect rug? There are many factors involved with colors, sizes, textures, etc. These are some easy guidelines.

Perhaps the most important consideration is size. Area rugs come in all sorts of sizes and styles, ranging from little accent rugs to room-size coverings. Obviously, the room will have to be measured to gauge the right size. Room size isn't the sole consideration, however. The function of both the room and the rug must be taken accounted for when deciding the suitable rug size. Is the rug meant to anchor a particular furniture grouping? In this situation, the appropriate size will be far smaller than if the rug is designed to cover acomplete room. It's helpful to use a tape measure to visualize different sizes in the room before going shopping, because the size will always look different in the store than itwill in the home.

Also needing to be considered are shape, color, and pattern. Rectangular rugs appear to be the hottest, but square, circle, and oval are all making strides in renown. As far as color is worried, area rugs are integral to a room's color range. They can function as an accent, that may stand out ; as an anchor, which is less noticeable ; or they can tie the whole decorating scheme together. In order to get the best match, take a fabric swatch or paint chip with for the shopping trip. Patterns vary widely nowadays, from traditional floral and oriental designs that repeat a specific motif over and over, to giant, single-shape patterns that are only featured once, to geometrical designs of varying scales. All of these considerations have a massive effect on a room and must be thought about carefully in order to buy the ideal area rug! Check out your local retailer or online store today.

How To Stage A Home

Home staging is the art of preparing a property for sale. However, home staging is not as easy as many people lead themselves to believe. In order for a property to be successfully staged, there are a lot of things that need to be kept in mind. Above all, house staging is the art of designing a home to appeal to the highest number of buyers possible. This often means decorating in a way that does not necessarily appeal to you.

If you are planning on doing your own house staging project, the first step is to take care of the exterior of the property. Curb appeal is vital in selling a home. The grass should be trimmed, any brushes or trees properly pruned. The exterior surfaces of the home should be washed or painted as needed. The exterior is the first impression of the property, and needs to be handled with care. A good impression of the exterior can lead to an even better impression of the interior.

Home staging is a blend of cleaning service and decoration. Inside the home, it is vital that every surface is completely cleaned. From floor to ceiling, wall to wall, every space must be dusted, washed and tidied for presentation. A clean home is vital in making a good first impression. A good first impression is even more important in securing the highly desired sale. When preparing the interior, neutral colors should be the star of the property, with accents, such as candles, lamps, rugs and vases, providing splashes of warming, inviting colors.

There are three parts of the property that home staging efforts typically focus on. First is the entryway. This room is where first impressions are made. The entry should be extremely clean and organized in such a way where it is easy for the buyer to imagine themselves living in. As buyers will often decide if they are interested in a property within a minute of seeing the first few rooms, the entry is integral towards making the sale.

The kitchen and bathroom are also vital in making a sale. These rooms should be extremely clean. Every corner should be dusted, washed and prepared for viewing. This is particularly true of the kitchen, where the buyer will expect to spend a great deal of their time. In the bathroom, the grout between the tiles should be spotless, and every tile cleaned in the shower or bath.

There Are Many Flooring Options to Choose From

The world of flooring has changed much over the last few years. With reasonable laminate wood and tile look options, people everywhere have converted their old floors to something new and beautiful. This doesn't mean that people aren't still buying tile and hardwood flooring, it just suggests that people who couldn't afford these options in the past now have the possibility to have the floor of their dreams without the price that's often associated with it.

Of course there's more standard flooring decisions such as carpets, vinyl and area rugs that are used around the globe as well and that still offer beautiful choices for the home. The final analysis is the type of floor that you have is all about preference, what you adore ( and what you don't ), and what you suspect will be right for your home.

Some of the things that you must consider when considering your flooring options are things like the traffic in your home. While a pleasant lush carpet is nice, if you have five kids and they track in and out of the house all day, then this is an expense you might want to avoid until the children have moved out of the house. For a home with a lot of traffic, tile floors or laminate flooring are the best options. Both can take a lot of abuse without showing the wear and tear that carpet and hardwoods can and while hardwoods can be repaired, it is an expensive process that you may have to do numerous times over while your kids are living at home. For lower traffic areas, you can select more lush and pricey products to put on your floor.

Choosing the right flooring can really be quite confusing with all of the decisions that there are. There are different carpet grades as well as decisions in padding to think about. Hardwoods come in several kinds of woods as well as colours and styles. Laminates open up those choices even more and make allowance for super dear looks at cheaper costs. Tiles literally come in all shapes and sizes and materials from stones like marble to ceramic tiles. There are non-traditional options that are becoming seriously hip also like concrete flooring, that will make your decisions even more hard.

To chop down your choices, pass the time taking a look at design magazines and homes on the web and start concentrating to the types of floors that draw your attention, this may help you when it comes time to make a decision about your floor.

Three Different Kinds of House Interior Design Style

When moving into your first home or apartment after college, it can be very challenging to decide how you are going to decorate your home. The reason it can be very challenging is that lots of homeowners, when decorating their first home or apartment, want to show off their unique style and taste and it can be difficult deciding what your personal taste is. Also, it can be difficult to decide whether to only use one theme or combine different interior design styles together. The three most common kinds of interior design styles are Modern/Contemporary, which includes modern furniture and modern design furniture .Romantic, and French. Most people like to have one or a combination of two or all three of these styles for their home decoration.
The Modern/Contemporary style includes a minimalist approach to design. The type of individuals who prefer the Contemporary look prefer to have a home that appears to have no clutter and therefore very little furniture. The look also is supposed to make uses of clean lines with very defined pieces of furniture in its style. The colors that most people associate with this kind of style are black and white, however, nowadays it seems that bright, bold colors can also be part of the contemporary design, and a bright yellow would be an example.
The French style is normally about the rustic, country look. A lot of the French style has bright, detailed furniture that also should look antique. Distressed furniture pieces are also involved in the French style. This design theme is all about a natural look. The colors that are normally used for this kind of style are light and soft colors, like a taupe or a light green color. Also, the flooring in the French style is normally distressed wood or tile that looks like it has been worn.
The Romantic style is illustrated by deep colors, big comfortable furniture, and rooms that feel cozy and intimate. This kind of design should have less lighting in all of the rooms for a more intimate feel in each room. Also, the fabrics that are apart of in the Romantic style are supposed to be bold in color or design. As far as colors, the Romantic look is supposed to look like it sounds, through the use of passionate with deep tones like reds, oranges, and purple. Finally, most individuals who prefer the Romantic style also prefer to have carpet in as many rooms as possible to give the home a more intimate and cozy feeling.
It is important to try to remember that these are just the three major types of interior design styles. There are numerous other styles that are available to you. And, if you do not want to redo your entire house from top to bottom, it is possible to still have these styles in your home without painting all of the walls and putting in all new floors. It is also important to remember that it is your home and your kind of style that will make the home truly yours, so look at all of the styles and don’t be afraid to pair different styles together.

Iconic Images: Stairways In The Movies

There aren’t many things more beautiful then Curved stair cases and spiral stair cases. They often have a form pleasing to the eye with a graceful ascension. There are reports that suggest the earliest known spiral stair case wasconstructed in 480-470 BC at Temple A in the Greek Colony in Selinante, Sicily. There are a multitude of well-known spiral staircases. The Round Tower in Copenhagen Denmark has no steps, just a spiraling promenade that rises to an observatory. It was commissioned in 1637 and is wide enough for carriages, as demonstrated by Peter The Great when he drove his horses up the tower on a visit to Denmark. The Vatican museum has a double helix of some renown. It is often photographed. One of the most fascinating of all spiral staircases is the one in New Mexico on the Old Santa Fe road in Santa Fe.

The Loretto Chapel was built as part of the Academy of Our Lady of Light. It was begun in 1873 under the guiding hand of the French Architect, Antione Mouly and his son. Mouly had been involved in the renovation of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris, and the Loretto Chapel was modeled after it on a smaller scale. Before it was completed, the architect perished. There are a few accounts that he was gunned down by the Bishops nephew over a woman. In any case, unfinished was the access to the choir loft which was 22 feet in the air. It is believed that the original idea may have been to provide a ladder for entry. This was an unattractive option to thesisters of Our Lady of the Light. They requested carpenters to offer their suggestions. All said it was unfeasible. The chapel was too small to build an adequate stairway.

This is where the legend begins. For nine days the sisters appealed to the Lord, performing a novena. Theybeseeched St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. For over a week nothinghappened. On the ninth day a man came to the church looking for work. With him he had a donkeycarrying woodworking tools. The stranger claimed he could construct a spiral case but would need a couple barrels of water to soak the wood.

There are reports that he worked for 6 months. Others claim it was done much more quickly. The outcome was a wooden spiral staircase with two 360 degree turns on its way to the loft. It was constructed using only wooden dowels, no nails or glue, and had 33 steps leading to the choir loft. The Sisters of Loretto were so pleased they offered a feast for the carpenter. He didn’t appear. The carpenter disappeared without a trace. The stranger didn’t receive his pay. The nuns placed a notice in the paper looking for him, but no one replied.

Those aren’t the only curious facts. The wood making up the staircase is a bit of a question. The type of wood hasn’t been identified. There are those that believe it is constructed from an ancient tree unavailable in New Mexico. None of the timber suppliers had sold any lumber to the Loretto Chapel for the staircase. The two compete turns was a master piece of workmanship. The spiral staircase had no visible means of support. Spiral staircases require a support structure, a center pole or fastening to solidobjects like walls. Some speculate the inner radius of the stair case was narrow enough to act as its own support. Still, it is a marvel of craftsmanship and the Loretto Staircase continues to awe visitors.

Furniture From the Amish – Superior Craftsmanship For The Generations

The Amish represent a time that many of us cherish when life was seemingly simpler and you could take the time to turn out a really exquisite piece of furniture, rather than just tossing together a collection of particle board covered with wood-like paint. It is nice to find that this tradition of fine craftsmanship has not vanished from the face of the earth! Indeed, Amish furniture is being crafted in several states and is as much-highly sought after as ever.

Among the trademarks of Amish craftsmanship is the attention to detail that is represented in every piece. At first glance the construction may seem to be quite plain, but the beauty lies in the attention to details. What draws the attention is, in a word, simplicity; but simplicity is deceptive, because beneath the surface lies a significant number of hours of work. What may be perceived by the casual observer to be plain, unadorned solid wood furniture is really carefully crafted, skillfully shaped works of art.

Amish furniture (such as solid wood game room furniture) is known world-wide for its clean, simple lines and finely sanded corners, as well as its solid construction. It is pretty much a sculptural form in its own right. Amish furniture makers are known for their extensive use of solid hardwoods, such as oak, cherry, maple, walnut and hickory. This is wonderful furniture that is made to last for years to come and is meant to be handed down from generation to generation. Amish furniture became extremely popular in the beginning of the 20th century when American folk art experienced a renaissance of sorts, and this popularity has increased to the present day. Amish furniture is an investment in longevity, and this particular type of investment increases in value quite nicely over time.

In Stores: handmade entertainment furniture

Amish furniture is made only in America, by Amish craftsmen and each piece is custom made with attention to detail, tight joints and extremely strong construction. Every single piece of furniture is hand polished, stained and sanded to exacting standards; this is furniture that anyone would be proud to own. It is rare in modern times to find anything that is made within America, by master craftsmen – but it is heartening to know that it is still available, and that the quality continues unabated.

Oval Rugs for a Country Feel

If you want to turn your room into cozy comfortable country feel then you can do that by adding an oval rug. There is something about oval rugs that give that type of feeling. The oval rugs come in many different colors, shapes, and sizes.

Use an Oval Rug in the Living Room

A large oval rug looks good in a living room or you can use small oval rugs. Choosing the right size can be tricky. You want to make sure that if you are sitting furniture on your rug you want to have enough rug to put your table and chairs on comfortably.

If you put a coffee table on the rug you want to make sure that you center it properly and you have the right sized rug.

Use an Oval Rug in the Kitchen

An oval rug in the kitchen works well too. A common place for an oval rug is under the kitchen table. If you want to place a rug under the kitchen table make sure that you purchase a rug large enough to sit the table and the chairs on. You won’t want the chairs to sit half way off the rug and making them seem unbalanced.

You will also need to put an oval rug at the kitchen sink. You spend a lot of time doing dishes so you want to make sure that you’re tired feet stand on a plush rug. Tile is hard and cold when you are standing on it. Try a braided oval rug for a country look.

Use an Oval Rug in the Bathroom

Rugs look great in the bathroom. Add an oval rug in front of the tub so you can safely get in and out of the bathtub or shower. When it gets dirty simply throw it in the washer to clean. Air-dry the rug before you use it.

Use an Oval Rug in the Bedroom

Don’t wake up and put your feet on the cold floor again. Simply place an oval rug down at your bed side and wake up to warmth.

A rectangle or square rug can be easy to use but nothing says country and cozy like an oval rug. You can purchase the oval rugs in any size or color.

A Masterpiece

Mies van der Rohe´s Barcelona Chair

Since its rise to the throne of the Spanish royal couple it has got a lot of attention: the Barcelona Chair. It has been named after the city which made it legendary and was designed by the well-known architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe on occasion of the World Exhibition in Spain in 1929. This amazing chair soon established itself as a cult object – until today it has developed into a popular piece of seating furniture in the lounges of many companies and a status symbol in living rooms all over the world. Following the motto of van der Rohe “less is more” the chair will be proof of your excellent taste which is subdued but cannot be overlooked. Not many other pieces of furniture have reached such a high awareness level or comparable worldwide sales figures over such a long period of time.

Van der Rohe designed the original with a slightly curved frame made of hand-welded steel band which has been chromed afterwards. But two decades later the architect has revised his design, when new technologies made the production of the frames in one piece possible. Today companies like BestofBauhaus.com are still producing the basic frames of the Barcelona Chair, made of chrome polished stainless steelwhich is resistant to oxidation in accordance with these guidelines. The production of the sophisticated button upholstery, consisting of individual squares of genuine aniline calfskin also corresponds with the original design of the master.

Although many decades have gone by since its first big presentation, this breathtaking object still is a statement for contemporary design, without neglecting its original purpose of use: to be your comfortable chair.

Having become a real classic, which is still trendy, it can now also become a office, as the Barcelona Chair still represents one of the most exquisite pieces of furniture from the bauhaus period.
