Yellow Theme For Home

If you want something bright or happy in your bathroom or bedroom area, you may find yellow as a suitable color. Yellow is a great color for interior however, many people mistaken the idea of yellow as a color that resembles the walls of hospitals or school buildings. But the real yellow can, in fact, become a very elegant and refreshing color, creating an interesting design for every room.

To start decorating with yellow theme, all you need is to pick your preferred shade of yellow. For example, a pale yellow is ideal as base color that goes with many other colors. Therefore, if you want bright yellow walls in your room, it can go well with light blue, orange or green colors, creating an ocean themed room.

For your bathroom, yellow can be very refreshing. You can paint the walls with lime waterproof paint, perfect for bathroom accessories with colors white, cream or primerose yellow.

Decorating With Red

Red is becoming a popular color in decorating circles but seeing red, this is also a rich color that is often used as accent color instead of the main color in a room. Most people tend to also take red into smaller accessories like porcelain wares, which are only seen occasionally.

If you love red so much and you plan to decorate your room with it, be careful. Red has a variety of hues that you need to be aware of in terms of how many items you will buy with red design. If you decide to use a large amount of red, like a wall color, you must be careful in using a similar color red or a dark color in the choice of your flooring. The choice of laminate or parquet flooring is a great way to ensure a change in the look of the room or simply replacing as many area rugs as you like.

There are some colors that do not go well with red. Green, for example, may be nice with the red, but others can associate this combination with Christmas. The same is true for the combined use of yellow and red, which gives the viewer a clear idea of McDonald's. It reminds us of a combination of ketchup and mustard and it just feels uncomfortable.

How To Decorate With Neutral Colors

Neutral colors are often considered boring, safe, and neutral! However, colors like beige, brown and white really add a wonderfully warm element to any room. The key is to decorating neutral colors is to properly use the colors and tones to a look great all together.

First, because you have beige walls in your living room does not mean you cannot add brilliant colors in the room. If you find a red carpet that attracts attention, you can also very well create a focal point. Sure, you can make your sofa and chair a little deeper in color, but oval rugs in bright colors certainly may have a particular dimension. If you want colorful and lively-colored furniture, this will work well when combined with solid, neutral-colored area rugs.

Neutral colors in your bathroom are a great idea too, but you also have to add some appeal to the room. Dark colors tend to make a smaller space, so if your bathroom is quite small, white or beige wall will make it look bigger.

Now it's better.

I bought a second hand house. It is cheap and I did not mind how it looks like. What I have in mind is the cost. After all, I can remodel and fix things in the house to improve it.

One thing I observed is the gloominess once inside the house. The wall in the receiving area is painted light blue. The bedroom's wall is colored light gray. The kitchen had a combination of brown and beige color. The colors made the house look gloomy.

I sat down and decided on what to do with the house before moving in. Repainting the inner house is quite expensive. I thought of putting accessories that may brighten up the ambiance. I tried to figure out what color of picture frames or wall decor would I use to brighten up the house. After many trials of simulating the appearance by sketching and coloring on paper how the walls would look like, I eventually decided to decorate with yellow the walls and other things. With the yellow accent in the house, now it is better and pleasing to one's eye.

Tips On How To Select The Right Interior Paint

Paint is the cheapest and probably the most versatile way to change the look of a room. You have wide range of choices when it comes to different types of paint. You can choose from matte finish, flat enamel, eggshell finish, satin finish, semi-gloss, and glossy. So how do you select the right kind of paint?

You have to know that each type of paint has some advantages and disadvantages. Matte finish paint, for example, can be used to disguise small cracks. But you do not want to do this if you are using colored paint since it will just enhance these cracks.

Regardless of what kind of paint you choose, you have to look at its coverage capabilities. In addition, you have to add at least 10% to the final quantity that you will buy since you will lose some paint in the process of using tools. You can also try to use a primer to save on paint.

Add Life and Color To Every Room

Each room in your house should be unique and amazing in its own way. One quick trick you can use to give each one a personality all its own is to use different colors to define living spaces more distinctly.

Painting your walls a different color for every area is a good idea especially for open-space housing, where the rooms open into each other and there are no dividers to distinguish the kitchen from the living room or the dining area from the foyer.

You can use subtle coloring techniques to emphasize a feature of a room, or you can also use it to signify transition from one room to the next. For example, you can paint your doorways a darker shade than the walls. You can also employ this technique for highlighting important places in a room, such a recessed bookcase or your breakfast nook.

When choosing colors for every room, pick a shade that’s already dominant in your home rather than getting a color that’s completely alien to your design or theme. Are your throw pillows mostly red? Get a color that goes well with them. The trick is not to play around with the color wheel too much, and striving the achieve a particular harmony throughout the entire house.

Pulling Out the Stops for an Ultra-Romantic Valentine's Day

While you can create a romantic mood by simply having a candle-light dinner with soft jazz music playing in the background, why not pull out all the stops and create an ultra-romantic ambience this Valentines Day. Sure, use the candles by all means; they certainly do much to enhance the romance quotient in any type of decor. But this Valentine’s Day, let candles be part of your overall romantic decor and not just the only element. Won’t your sweetheart be in for a great surprise!

Take time to plan and do try and get your shopping done at least a few days in advance. While you may have to rush home from work a few hours early to set up the house as a surprise, you don’t want to be completely tired from having to do everything from cleaning and shopping to cooking and decorating in one day. Wouldn’t you love to get in some slow-dancing before sitting down to your elaborately planned candle light dinner? Do as much as you can in the time you have but don’t forget to reserve the best for last.

Prepare the Room

It’s Valentine’s Day! It’s the one day in the year when you are justified in going all out with the special romantic touches. Pull out all the stops! Fill your house with plenty of helium balloons in pink, red and white. Let them float above your bed or your dining table; perhaps both, tie them to the staircase railing; tie them anywhere you can think of.

Tie big red bows everywhere- on the backs of chairs, your bed post and on every soft toy you have. Drape yards of sheer red fabric over side tables. A forest of red scented candles in different shapes and sizes is a feast for all the senses. Choose your location carefully though; you don’t want to dampen the mood by having to call in the fire brigade.

Set the Table

There’s much you can do to create a romantic table setting. A rich red tablecloth draped over the table or some sheer red fabric gathered in the centre of the table is great as a starting point. Instead of fabric you could scatter fragrant red rose petals all over the table for an uber-dramatic effect.

Place heart-shaped votive candles at the ends of the table. Put heart shaped candies in a heart-shaped bowl. If that’s too ‘hearty’ even for a die-hard romantic like you, you could perhaps put a few heart-shaped candies in red wrappers in a long-stemmed wine glass. It’s stunningly romantic without being overly so.

Don’t even think of getting paper plates that have hearts on them. This occasion calls for getting out your finest chinaware. White plates on deep red table mats can create a dramatic look. Or if you feel like it, go ahead and splurge on two gorgeous red plates just for the occasion. Make it a traditional ritual of love to bring them out every year on Valentines Day. Get out the champagne flutes and tie a pretty red satin bow on the stem of each.

Set the Mood

Now that you’ve got everything set up (amazingly simple; wasn’t it?) it’s time to create a romantic atmosphere. Keep your collection of romantic music handy so you can have music to slow dance to, all night long. Dim the lights; or better still, turn them off and set the night on fire by lighting up all your candles in the candle forest. If you still have reservations about lighting up a group of candles, just place them there for effect but light individual candles everywhere else you can think of- window sills, tables and even the stair case.

When there’s romance in the air, the possibilities are endless. Why not ditch minimalism this Valentines Day and pull out all the stops to show your partner how much you care. It’s sure to pay rich dividends.

Love Is in the Air – Easy Valentine’s Home Decor

Love is in the air…

Everywhere you look around,

Love is in the air…

Every sight and every sound

This 60’s song is perfect for Valentine’s Day! Be sure to have it playing in the background while you cuddle up in front of the fireplace on Valentine’s Day!

Dreaming of setting up an elaborately romantic atmosphere but just can’t find the time? Why not meet your dreams half way by creating a romantic atmosphere that is not time-consumingly elaborate? A few romantic touches around the house; a gigantic bouquet of red roses; a romantic table-setting… It’s the little things you do that tell your loved one how special they are to you and how much you care for them.

Here are a few easy ideas to give your home a quick but romantic Valentine’s Day makeover. Incorporate all or just a few and very soon you’ll feel the love all around you.

All you need to buy is plenty of red ribbon, a few candles and perhaps a few red roses:

· Place a bouquet of roses on a table where they can be easily seen as soon as your spouse enters the room

· Make big red bows with the red ribbon and tie them around the two chairs you and your spouse will be using at the dining table. If you have a chandelier hang a big red bow from each arm of the chandelier for extra effect

· Make smaller bows and tie them round the cutlery you will use for dinner and around the stems of your wine glasses. Tape one little bow onto the computer monitor as a day-long reminder of your love

· String a length of red ribbon across the doorway at the entrance of every room

· A 3-tiered candelabrum with red candles is perfect for the dining table. One red candle will do just as fine if you do not have a candelabrum.

· Alternatively place an over-sized shallow bowl of water on the table and place a few votive candles inside. Scatter a few rose petals over the water for added effect.

· Place a small vase of fresh flowers in the bathroom and a larger vase in the kitchen.

· It’s still cold in February. Setting the fireplace alight is a great way to fill the room with warmth, coziness and romance.

· In the bedroom place a single, long-stemmed red rose gently across the pillow.

· Bake a heart-shaped cake or bake a few heart-shaped cookies. Even if you use your regular every-day recipe, your heart-shaped cake and cookies will taste more special because it’s Valentine’s Day.

All that’s left to do now is to dim the lights, light the candles, put on the music and get out that bottle of wine.

Whether you choose to decorate your home in red, pink or white, don’t worry too much about whether or not it goes with the rest of the décor. After all, when love is in the air, nothing else matters. Your spouse is not going to waste this precious day making notes of what matches and what doesn’t.

Tips For Preparing To Paint Your Interiors

Things to consider before you begin painting
The first step in any redecorating project is to select an overall color scheme. That means taking all aspects of your decorating plan into consideration — furnishings, carpeting and wall color.
Color can create a mood, accentuate architectural assets and hide flaws. For more information go to interior paints

Be sure to consider the items listed below when selecting decorating colors:

1)What type of mood you want to create.

2)What furniture, artwork, architectural features, or other aspects of the room you want to emphasize

3)Any awkward physical characteristics of the room you would like to overcome.

The color you decide to paint your walls should be an integral part of your decorating decisions. Once you have decided on the wall color, you can select a specific paint shade using samples of all materials to be included in the room. Remember, color may appear differently depending on how large the painted area is, whether a glossy or flat finish is used, what other colors are nearby and the type of lighting used in the room.

Material you will need for the painting job

Before beginning any new paint project, assemble all of the items you will need to complete it. Here's a list:

Paint — in a sufficient quantity to do the entire job
Appropriate applicators (brushes, rollers, etc.) Refer to paint for more information.

Drop clothes — old sheets are fine

Stepladder

Screwdriver — to remove wall hooks, door knobs and switch plates
Plastic automotive tape — to edge window panes and cover other areas you don't want painted. (Used for painting stripes on cars, it is available at auto supply and paint stores.)

Hand cream — to rub on your hand and arms before painting to make paint removal easier.

Turpentine or paint thinner — when using oil-based paint

Interior paint selection
Paint comes in a wide variety of brands and types. These brief descriptions will help you decide which type best suits your needs:

Latex paints — These are water-thinned and apply easily with a brush or roller. Clean-up with soap and water is a distinct advantage. Latex paints are available in most gloss ranges and will do a good job in most interior areas. They are not flammable and have a very mild odor.

Alkyd (oil) paints — These are solvent-thinned paints. They apply well with a brush or roller but need turpentine or mineral spirits for clean-up. Sometimes preferred for areas where constant cleaning is necessary, like kitchens and bathroom shower areas.

Very high gloss enamels are usually solvent-thinned. Odor is stronger during application than with latex paints, but disappears after a few days.

Enamels — Enamels are generally smoother and dry to a harder surface than other interior paints. They are available in high or low gloss and can be either latex or alkyd.

Gloss — The gloss is the luster or shininess of a dry paint. Paints are usually classified as flat, eggshell, semi-gloss or high gloss. A wide variety of gloss ranges is available.

Special paints and coatings — These are available for most surfaces. Wood floors, concrete or masonry and metal surfaces require specific products. Consult your paint retailer and read the paint can label carefully for recommendations.

Since masonry usually contains alkali, the paint used to cover it should be alkali-resistant. Special paints are generally recommended.

Over iron or steel, a rust-inhibitive primer is usually desirable.
Any type of enamel or paint may be used over the primer as a topcoat — depending on the use of the area to be painted. Visit paint colors for further information.

Interior Design: Paint It White: Which White?

I wanted to paint my walls white. How hard could that be? You go to the paint store, buy a few gallons, and slap it on. Go to interior paints for more information.

I did that first part: I went to a paint store. But when I told the salesman I needed white paint, he pulled out that color chart that opens up like a fan to reveal six hundred different shades of white and throws you into a full on panic attack. (I've never responded well to a multitude of choices.)

"Can you narrow it down to, say, the creamy ones?" I asked. The salesman licked his fingers and snapped shut about a third of the Panic Wheel, leaving me with only about 400 decisions to make. I grew a whiter shade of pale and moisture sprang from my armpits. Clearly this was too much for me.

I went home and launched a large-scale obsession. I asked friends and relatives for their thoughts on white paint. I visited my neighbor on the pretext of borrowing a can opener and secured the name of her paint color. I called a hotel where I'd once admired the bedroom walls. I asked the bookseller, the neurologist, the florist, anywhere I saw a good white, I asked someone what it was. I went online, did some social networking, picked the brains of people I do not know.

When I'd finally assembled a group of color candidates, the wall of my dining room became a patchwork of samples, which I checked on at different times of day as the light shifted. Refer to paint for more information.

I also painted the colors on white Bristol board and carried the samples from room to room. I made decisions, booked the painter, panicked and un-booked him. I threw away rejected colors, and then, in a frenzy of uncertainty, re-bought them for another look.

I kept all this activity covert, under my husband's radar, so he wouldn't have me committed. I did eventually make a few selections, and it worked out all right, if not perfectly. (One room suffered through two repaints.)

I offer here a list of my top choices of white wall paint (which are really almost-but-not-quite white) from a variety of manufacturers. This will save you weeks of trial and error, time better spent mastering the tango, buying a new garden hose, or writing your congresswoman. (If you do write her, please ask what color she painted her bathroom.)

Benjamin Moore ($20-$50 per gallon)
I used both "Oatmeal" and "Linen White," the latter being more yellowy, the former more, well, oaty, but both nice colors. "Swiss Coffee" is another one I have used, which is like white with a little splash of espresso. "Alabaster" is a good B.M. color for trim, also.

Donald Kaufman ($90 per gallon)
"#28" is a beautiful creamy white my sister-in-law has all over their house. I was too cheap to buy it, but D.K.'s paint is amazing, more like light than paint, so you might want to splurge in a room or two.

Farrow and Ball ($70 per gallon)
This manufacturer makes my favorite colors, all of which have inspiring names. It's pricey, so I limited myself to using "Matchstick" in my office only, but if I were going to splurge I'd have also gone for "Satin Slipper" or "Clunch," colors so interesting they inspire conversation.

YOLO ($40 per gallon)
If you are in eco-friendly mode, these paints are non-toxic and low VOC, and Air.01 and Air.02 are lovely whites.

Restoration Hardware ($32-$36 per gallon)
"Mediterranean White" and "Buttermilk" are good choices and reasonably priced, and "The Right White" is great for trim. Visit paint colors for further information.

Tips On Selecting The Perfect Paint Finishes For Your Home

Even after a homeowner has chosen the perfect color for a room, there's another very important decision to make. With 5 or 6 paint finishes to choose from, you should learn the benefits of each and determine the right one for your job. Should you use flat or satin and why? Browse these tips on selecting the perfect paint finishes for your interior home applications. Go to interior paints for more information.

Whether called flat finish or wall paint, this type of interior paint has a matte surface. This paint finish is usually used on interior walls. It's especially good if you have to camouflage small wall bumps, cracks, or other imperfections, as this finish does not reflect light. While some flat paints are advertised as washable today, you may need to touch up scratches or marks by covering with a bit more paint, so be sure you keep some on hand after you've finished painting.

Flat Enamel
Flat enamel is a paint with a durable flat, matte finish. It's a good choice for powder rooms and halls, as it holds up to occasional cleaning.

Eggshell Finish
If you can picture the very low sheen of the shell of an egg, you have an idea of how an eggshell paint finish will appear. With only a slight hint of shine or gloss, it's good for walls and holds up better with cleaning than a flat finish paint.

Satin Finish
Satin finish paint has a smooth, velvety look with a bit more gloss. It is most often used for windows, doors, trim, or ceilings, but can also be used as wall paint. This is particularly suitable for kids' room walls, kitchens, or bathrooms, or in areas which get a lot of traffic. Paint with a satin finish is formulated to hold up to cleaning and light scrubbing.

Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss paint is most often used on doors, trim, and cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms. It is easily cleaned and lays down a nice, subtle shine, without being too glitzy. Take care with pre-paint preparation work, as poorly prepared surfaces can be a bit distracting when highlighted by a semi-gloss surface.

Glossy
High gloss paints have an almost reflective quality, as their shiny finish mimics the look of enamel or plastic. Though not widely used in home interiors, it is becoming more popular for a dramatic look on cabinets, trim, and furniture in very formal and very contemporary settings. This finish will magnify any surface imperfections, so careful preparation and sanding is essential before painting with high gloss paints.

There are some particular application specifics that you should consider when selecting an interior paint finish. Refer to paint for more information.

Cleanability and Durability
While most manufacturers have developed all paint finishes with good cleaning qualities, a general rule is that the shinier the paint finish, the better it will stand up to washing and cleaning.

Kid-Friendly Finishes
When painting children's rooms, many painters recommend using an eggshell or satin paint on the walls and semi-gloss for doors and moldings. These finishes are formulated to better withstand repeated cleanings.

Rustic Looks
In order to give a worn or old look, use flat finish paints for walls or furniture. If cleanability is an issue, you might select a flat enamel for trim or an eggshell finish for walls.

High Gloss Looks
Rather than choosing a high gloss paint for a whole room, use it sparingly in select locations, such as doors and trim. The brilliant surface can appear a bit cold and uninviting. Remember to spend extra time preparing the surfaces to be painted glossy, as this finish tends to really point out any surface imperfections.

Ceiling Paint
If you're looking for a basic white ceiling, you can buy pre-mixed, matte finish paints off the shelf at almost any paint or home improvement store. Because cleanabiltiy or coverage is not a particularly important consideration, some ceiling paints use cheaper formulations. If you need an exact color match for the color scheme of your room, choose regular tinted flat wall paint.

Ceiling Finishes
Ceilings in most rooms are painted with a flat finish paint. You could also select an eggshell finish if the surface of the ceiling is flawless. Choose a glossier finish for good light reflection, but only if the ceiling is newly resurfaced and has no blemishes.

Kitchens and Baths
Any room, such as a kitchen or bathroom, that will be exposed to water, splashing, or steam, is best painted with a semi-gloss paint. A guest bath or powder room which will have less-frequent use, could be painted with lower-gloss paint, such as satin or eggshell finish. Visit paint colors for further information.

Painting Tips – Easy Office Decorating ideas

When looking for new office decorating ideas, one of the easiest areas to tackle is your color scheme. Simply tweaking the color layout of your office can transform your office with dramatic effects.

When choosing colors for a room, it is important to consider the size of the room and whether you want to enhance it's features or change the entire perception of the room. There are some very basic guidelines regarding color that you should know when changing your color shceme, some of which we have outlined below.

  • White walls – whiate or light color walls will reflect light and make your office appear larger
  • Dark walls – dark color walls will make your office appear smaller
  • White ceilings – white celings will make your room appear taller
  • Cool colors – cool colors will make the walls appear farther away
  • White ceilings – white or light colored ceilings will make your office look narrower and taller if you paint them with darker color walls

Using these color rules can give you a good starting point. If you want your office space to appear a certain way, or have a certain trait, this will give you a good base template to work from.

Taking a page from Feng Shui color combinations, we can also explore some particular color pairings.

Black and white – this represents yin and yang and balance. This color combination may be good for corporate offices or boardrooms.

Silver and Dark Purple – another yin and yang color combination, however, this particular combo also carries a strong symbolism of money.

Red and Gold – this color combination is considered very bright and is a symbol of good fortune.

Blue and Black – this combination would work well for those businesses having to do with paper or wood, publishers for instance.

Blue and Green – a combination that stresses the water element, a good selection for your business if you deal with water or liquid.

Earth tones – these colors convey a warm and inviting feeling

Once you have your color scheme chosen, you next need to decide if you want a pattern, solid color, or some kind of mix of the two elements. You can add shapes and lines to add some contrast in your office space. Any lined shape, rectangles, triangles, diamonds will work well. You do not need to add the shapes or lines to every wall to have a dramatic effect, consider three walls of solid color with a single wall containing your pattern for contrast.

This can help avoid making your office decor come across as over the top. For additional office decorating ideas you can add circular art to the walls, which will even out the shapes or lines you have chosen to include. A round mirror is a good example of something that would contrast something like a triangle pattern. This will help to soften up the office space.

By incorporating a new color scheme, you can dramatically transform your office decor. Additionally, this is one of our office design ideas that can really be done on any budget. For the cost of a couple cans of paint, you can completely transform what used to be a drab office into something new and exciting.

As an added bonus to a great new office, you may also see your production rise after the new office design is put into place. Just having a work space that you can feel good about can really make a profound impact on your state of mind. More production and less stress from a few simple coats of paint, what a deal!

Use Of Color In Interior Designs

Interior design for children is one of the most fun, delightful aspects of the business if you ask me. It is so fun because children are limitless as far as their creativity and imaginations are concerned. Whenever planning interior design for children, be sure to involve the children in the planning and-if you feel very brave, the implementation of your designs. Go to interior paints for more information.

A good beginning point or theme for interior design for children is to start with any favorite activity or toy or even character of the child's interest. Remember that many items of interest to children are topics that will change with time so try to take advantage of these interests and favorites with accessories and changes that will be easy to replace in the future as their interests and needs change. If a child has an interest or a particular activity that they are very enthused about and they have a special request that would make the design very special to them, go for it as long as the parents are as enthusiastic as the child is. Also, forewarn them of any possible headaches they might experience changing it in the future when it comes time to redesign the space in order to accommodate the child's changing needs.

When choosing your color plan or schemes remember that interior design for children offers you unique opportunities to use bold or bright colors that would usually not be ideal for use in adult surroundings. Along the same lines, certain areas of the room would be more ergonomic to use as focal points then would in an adult's atmosphere. For example, a chalkboard or toy box might capture a child's attention more so then would a table or seating arrangement.

Another aspect of design that will vary from adult tastes when planning interior design for children would be the accessories that will be used to highlight and accentuate key features. Toys and collectibles make wonderful objects to use in this application. However, many times toys that are placed on display or for decoration are toys that the child would enjoy much more by being able to play with it rather then it actually being on display. You can solve this dilemma by either using old, unused toys that no longer captivate the child's interests or even by purchasing duplicates and allowing them to actually use one version of the toy and letting them know that the others are for looking only. Also, keep in mind that collectibles often times are of less significance to smaller children then are to adults so make sure that any item placed in a child's room is not of significant fiscal or sentimental value just in case! Refer to paint for more information.

Tying in interior design for children can be accomplished easily by purchasing one of millions of available bed treatments that is complimentary to the designs and themes used in the creation of the room layout as well as fitting in well with the accessories chosen. Many bed treatment packages come prepackaged with matching detailed sheets, a comforter, dust ruffle, and window coverings. These items can bring a room together in the greatest of all fashions and are an option in interior design for children that are obtainable by anyone looking to make a change.

Always remember when planning interior design for children that a child changes attitudes, opinions, and behaviors around every three years. Permanent changes of any type are a big no-no and practical, cost effective ones are ideal. A good furniture tip to remember when designing for kids is to buy reasonably priced, sound furniture that doesn't break the bank. Kids are even harder on furniture then they are on clothes! And most importantly to take into consideration when working with interior design for children–of course, HAVE FUN!!! Visit paint colors for further information.

Agreements older examples of interior designs had darker colors and bold designs; modern interior design has a lot to do with simplicity. The main reason for this is that modern society stressed out, so modern interior design works on the premise of how important it is for a home to not clutter with most furniture.

Similarly, bright colors do wonders in relieving stress and improving a person mood, so another important feature of modern interior design is to carry out lighter colors such as pastels. Lighter colors also are a technique used by designers to make a smaller room appear roomier.

When it comes to furniture, abstract art has a lot to do with how rooms built. For example, since modern interior design has a lot to do with providing the owner with a stress-free environment, many homes have many windows to display their modern interior design; in fact, some homes have windows that are the size of an entire wall.

Another important of modern interior design is art as decoration. The art that you choose is up to you, but people often like to decorate their homes with impressionistic paintings of natural scenes. Cleaning And Caring For Indoor Wall Fountains

So, you’ve bought your very own wall water fountain. What’s next? Well, it’s probably a good time to learn how to take care of it. A wall water fountain does require a certain amount of maintenance to make sure you get the most from whichever water fountains you have, and you will be delightfully surprised to know that how little effort it involves to keep them clean and the water bright. Be sure to follow all the operating instructions along with these tips.

One easy and effective way to keep your fountains in great condition is to fill their basins with distilled water. Why distilled water? The main reason is because ordinary tap water contains a high mineral content. You can get a nasty mineral buildup when the water has a high mineral content, this can keep your fountain from functioning correctly.

UV lighting can also help you keep the water clean. When properly installed, generally in the fountain’s basin, UV lighting kills bacteria in the water. This purifies and filters the water and prevents bacterial damage to the pump and the fountain itself. This purification method is particularly pertinent when it comes to wall water fountains because UV lights even kill those bacteria that hide in the hard to reach corners and wedges of the fountain; and as we all know, nobody wants to go through the arduous process of unmounting a indoor wall fountain just to clean it by hand.

If the pump is making loud noises, there is usually a problem somewhere that you need to check into. After all, you bought your wall water fountains so you could hear the gentle and serene trickle of water; you don’t want to hear some grinding, busted pump. You are wanting to simulate the sound of water lapping over rocks, not the clang clang of the pump! Most often, a noisy pump signifies that the water levels in the fountain basin are far too low. You may have to reposition the pump because of it rubbing on the sides or other areas of the fountains the vibration is what you are hearing.

One great way to stay organized with the proper maintenance of your fountains, you may want to formulate a “cleaning schedule” and set up dates to change the water in your wall water fountains. Keep in mind, as I said earlier, that using properly distilled water will mean you won’t have to change it and clean it as often. All this entails is emptying the water out and sponge off the basin and the entire fountain if need be. Also remove the algae from the rocks in necessary. Make sure to clean off the pump and all that is connected to it. Return the pump, fill the basin with distilled water, turn the pump on again and presto, you’ve cleaned your wall water fountain.

Then to doubly protect the water there are cleaning agents and enzymes to help battle the bacteria and keep it from thriving in the water. You measure it out according to how many gallons of water your indoor wall fountains happen to contain. In a spot, you can just pour some bleach in to keep things fresh.

If you follow these steps and are careful to properly maintain and care for your wall water fountains, you will surely find that your fountains will last a long, long time.

How To Refinish Hardwood Floors

Several homes, especially centrally located homes, have hardwood flooring. A pristine hardwood floor is beautiful, but to restore one back to its original 60 year old elegance, the floor will need to be refinished. For more information refer to Decorating Services

Refinishing hardwood floors can be a challenging job for the do-it-yourselfer, but with some preparation and research, it can be done without the help of a professional.

Many older homes have gone through fads, and one that became a norm was wall to wall carpeting. If wood floors hide under a carpet, it will have to be removed. After all furniture has been removed, pull up carpeting and its tack strip, making sure to remove nails and staples that will hinder sanding performance later.

Sanding floors during the refinishing process creates a lot of sawdust. Prep the area by taping off doors and cabinets, and opening windows. Covering areas with damp sheets helps trap the sawdust.

After the area around the floor is completely prepped, use a drum sander to sand the floor. They can be rented at most home improvement stores. The purpose of the sanding is to cut the floor and remove the old finish. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper, such as a 20 or 36 grit paper, and move up to 60 and 100 grit. The lighter grit sandpaper is used to remove the scratch marks made by the heavier grit paper.

A drum sander can be daunting on its first use. They are loud and powerful, so wear ear plugs, eye protection, and a dust mask. A common first-timers mistake is gouging the floor, which is a hard problem to fix, and easier to prevent. Start by tilting the sander back before turning it on, and slowly lowering it to the floor. Go to Decorating Services

Find a good test area that may be covered by a rug or furniture, and move the machine back and forth, without keeping it in one spot, as doing so can damage the floor in a few seconds. Move the sander in the same direction as the grain of the wood floor. When the machine becomes difficult to maneuver, it's time to move to a lighter grit paper. Edges of the floor can be hard to sand with the large drum sander, so either renting an edge sander, or doing these areas by hand, is recommended.

After the old finish has been removed, and the floors smoothed with the sander, the room must be vacuumed. It's advisable to vacuum and dust the floors, walls, light switches, and every area that can be reached. Let the dust settle, and vacuum again to insure no dust will end up in the new finish. Running a tack cloth (also available at home improvement stores) along the floor after it's been vacuumed is also advisable.

It's now time to apply a stain to the wood, unless the natural color of the wood is preferred. If possible, test the stain on your floor, as color charts may be helpful, but not always accurate depending on the wood of your floor, and how it takes the stain. Apply the stain in a circular motion with cloth rags. Spread the stain as evenly as possible to keep the color consistent.

The final step to refinishing a floor is applying the finish. There are oil and water based finishes. Though oil finishes are less expensive, the water based dry quicker, finish clear, and do not have the solvent odor that oil based finishes contain. Make sure to not shake the finish, as it will create bubbles that will end up on the floor. Slowly stir it, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure to plan the final application finishing in a doorway, and after a few coats, the floor refinishing is complete. For more information refer to Decorating Service

Use Of Color In Interior Designs

Many homeowners will put a considerable amount of time in determining the best use of color in interior designs throughout the home. They will take the size of the room into consideration and the way the room will be used. Some people choose to use bright colors in dark recesses of the home, and use darker colors when they are trying to achieve a warm effect. Refer to interior paints for more information.

The use of color in interior designs can set the mood in any room of the home where color is applied. The colors can be consistently used throughout the home to evoke a sense of uniformity and well-being. Some people choose to apply lighter shades to walls, and then apply a darker but complimentary shade of the same color to the ceilings in every room of the home.

In the use of color in interior designs, homeowners have the opportunity to blend themes with the colors that they choose. For a boy's room, parents might choose to use darker colors such as blue to compliment the sports theme and motifs that they apply to the walls such as ballpark murals and those that mimic an international raceway that is typically the choice of an avid NASCAR fan. For more information refer to paint

Many homeowners will choose to the use of color in interior designs throughout the home so that they will blend with the wallpaper. The wallpaper that is used, as bordering around the ceiling, will be more attractive if the use of color in interior designs serves to bring out one basic color that is in the wallpaper.

Some border colors can become more vivid when the coloring on the wall is directly opposite of the wallpaper that is applied. This arrangement is normally chosen for rooms of adolescents that have a distinct liking for shades of pink and want their room to be fit for a princess and adorned with carriages and crowns and sometimes feathers. The finishing touch on rooms that are this elaborate would consider the use of color in interior designs that could be considered complete with the addition of wispy curtains and a complimentary light fixture.

Many homeowners will consider many fabric swatch samples before they find the right one for a particular area of the home. Then they will apply the use of color in interior designs in the room to bring out the rich grains and weaves of the fabric on the walls and still development some flow that they are trying to achieve. Homeowners will sometime choose to use actual wood planking along the lower portions of walls to create a visual path inside a room that is used for business use. Visit paint colours for more information.

Other people might prefer to apply tiles to walls and the use of color in interior designs in a bathroom might be based on the protective qualities that the paint provides against water damage. Latex paints are available in many color choices and this type of paint is very suitable for use in rooms that have a high level of exposure to humidity and wetness.

How Do I Know What Type Of Firebox Is Right For My Condo

How To Pick The Right Decorative Fireplace For My Family

A hearth is a important addition to any home. They are perfect for providing some comfort during cold winter days and nights but better than that, they are fun. A hearth gives off feelings of friendship and love along with their warmth. No one can deny how nice it is to gather with family or friends in front of a hearth sharing stories and laughter. When you think of a hearth, you may have pictures in your head images of the old built in type with a brick chimney up the side of the house. Today that is not the case, you can find fireplaces of all shapes and sizes that are portable and use a variety of fuel.

Overall most fireplaces are either gas or wood burning varieties although there are some that use electricity. A decorative fireplace mantel: can be a fancy and ornate part of your living room or den ; however, they can also be subtly functional pieces that hold the firebox. Choosing a great wood fireplace mantel: will make your hearth a central piece and are very easy to put in. Conventional fireplaces, while attractive , are not the most energy efficient and if you are not knowledgeable about their proper use can actually pose both a health and physical hazard .

Optional “fireplaces” and heat sources:

When electric fireplaces were first introduced in the 70's and 80's they were a cheap and tacky looking affair. With new technology has come the ability to create electric fireplaces that look so real it takes a close inspection to tell the difference. Of course, they will not have the same crackling, smoky ambiance of a conventional fireplace design but they are much more portable and efficient. The fact is many electric fireplaces generate enough heat to warm a 400 sq ft room. In addition, you have the choice of hundreds of styles, colors, and mantel types. There is a portable fireplace to fit any style or need.

One of the most widely used alternative fuels today is propane. Propane is a highly refined product that is left over from the processing of crude oil and natural gas. As fireplaces go, propane fueled one burns much hotter than any other type. Compared to a wood burning fireplace they have less pollutants as well. Next to gel or indoor electric fireplace, propane is a lot less expensive, however they emit more pollutants than these two do. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are common pollutants of a propane fireplace. If you like, the look of a traditional flame fireplace but not the health risks associated with wood or the cost of gel look no further than a propane fireplace.

Gel Fireplaces are different from electric fireplaces in that they actually start a real fire. The fuel required for these is a gel like substance that is odorless , non-toxic and environmentally friendly. These fireplaces all meet the EPA standards of cleanliness, without using wood or gas . One canister of gel is enough fuel to burn at 3,000 BTU's for up to three hours, this is not as energy efficient as an electric fireplaces but they are nice for heating a localized small area Many gel fireplace owners simply burn two canisters at once, increasing the BTU emission and therefore promoting even more warmth over a larger area. This will increase the BTUs and allow you to heat a larger area. Even though they are less cost effective than an electric fireplaces, they are perfect for the person who wants to keep the romantic quality that comes with a conventional type fireplace and all without any possible consequences of wood smoke.

A hearth is not only a wonderful addition they can actually increase the value of your home. With all the different kinds of fireplaces and mantels available, you will find one that meets all your needs perfectly. A fireplace is something you can enjoy for years to come.

Droog Creates Hip Contemporary Lighting From Reusables

Tejo Remy brings a hot, new feel to reusable, everyday castaways, turning each one into a unique work of art. The Dutch designer pairs with Droog, an Amsterdam based company to dazzle the international crowd with fresh, green contemporary lighting ideas, breaking ground for lighting design as you have never known. Whimsical and modern, recyclables are turned into grace and prose, as only artist Remy can do.

The famous Milk Bottle light, by Remy, invokes a simple sense of 50's-era nostalgia. This striking product can be manipulated into a variety of lighting solutions. Capable of changing perspective wherever they are utilized, these lamps can both charm and inspire our personal living spaces. The single Milk Bottle lamp hangs independently, casting a subtle glow. The Droog Milk Bottle Chandelier is a collection of twelve individual bottle pendants, combined into one unusual light fixture. The modern chandeliers work best in spaces that echo their shape, mainly hallways, dining rooms or above kitchen islands.

Fifteen year old Droog has been making a difference with green innovative products in style and purpose and was once again a popular choice at this year's 'A Touch of Green', held in Milan. A company demanding a change without compromising style, Droog is based in Amsterdam but has independent designers as well as clients all over the world.

As a design collective, Droog expertly taps the talent of other talented young designers including Rody Graumans. Selected for inclusion in Droog's first design collection, Graumans' 85 Lamps Chandelier was also chosen for the permanent collection of MoMA as a testament to its design ingenuity, economy of form and minimalist aesthetic. Comprised of a simplistic array of 85 individual 15-watt bulbs and a bundle of black cords and sockets, the collective effect of these simple bulbs is a stunning display of light. Used in many museums, this timeless piece can also serve as an amazing contemporary addition for the living room or dining room with its splendor.

With his striking background in environmental and industrial projects, another noted designer, Arian Brekveld, contributes to the Droog lighting line with the Droog Soft Hanging Lamp. Brekveld's use of flexible PVC turns a seemingly traditional lamp into a safe and soft modern object, never one simulating what most of us consider as plastic. Formed as a tasteful globe, the material leaves any guest guessing as to its material.

Illuminating the way into a green future with astounding new talent makes Droog a leader in modern lighting. Having the foresight since 1993 to see a need for change, they are far ahead of many designers in preserving our world with beauty and style.
