My favorite surface to arrange combinations on is my hardwood dining room table which has been oiled and waxed to a mellow glow. I had found an old blown glass oil lamp with a black wrought iron cradle in a garage sale. This now sits at the center of the dining table in its new life as a receptacle for my flower arrangements.

I get the full effect especially in the evenings when the lighted oil lamps and tapers in etched glass candle holders bring out the glow of glass, blooms and wood.

One of my retro-loving friends found that the best appliances for her kitchen that could be easily disguised to look like those of yesteryears were those with a stainless steel finish because the surfaces could take enamel and glue without damage to their inner workings.

Some of the larger surfaces would be enameled to resemble those of the 50's and 60's, but most of the time, her "back-in-timer" is her glue gun. With just her glue gun and pre-enameled decor or pre-shaped plastic in neon colors or op-art designs, she has turned her kitchen into a vintage showroom while keeping the efficiency of the latest in high kitchen technology.

Balancing the disguised modernity with authentic retro jars, lamps, dinnerware and wall art, she has successfully achieved the ambiance of the era of her choice minus that era's inconvenience.

With sliding panels installed into the cutouts of the interior walls, I could change the mood of my place from private and cozy when I wanted to meditate or vegetate (which is actually my creative state), to bright and airy when having a party with friends.

This also allowed me to plan my decor in a more cohesive way, instead of it being cut-up into room packets. Even the flooring and rugs I chose had a logical sequence from entrance to kitchen.

The general effect is now one of potential vitality at rest and I am totally satisfied. Even my friends have commented that I finally have managed to successfully reconcile my space, my dreams and my budget.

We are planning our own royal wedding party to view the coverage of the London event, and they all want to hold it here. One of the guys is bringing over his large flat screen; the rest will take care of food and drinks and all I have to provide is the ambience.

One way to get out of this misery is to get yourself and your things organized at home. By restoring order at home, it can also help you restore your life in a healthy way. The key to all these, of course, is being able to adapt a new life without the person and at the same time have a positive attitude to be willing to try to stay alive.

Of course, a change of scenery and a sense of order can certainly help.
