Bookcase Art

When I was younger, I loved books. I was the kid who read under the covers with a flashlight and got in trouble so many times when my parents caught me. I remember watching Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and the Beast's castle had a library where the walls were basically bookshelves, and were filled with books! It was my dream to one day have a house that had a room that had no walls, but just book cases. That dream has died down since then, but I still love books and it's always difficult to find enough places to put them, especially since book cases take up wall space and sometimes it can be an intimidating and cluttering look for the home.

Book storage companies now have realized this problem, I'm sure, as now there are so many ways to rectify the clutter-looking bookcase feel! Companies have started making book cases in cool shapes that can create awesome compositions on your wall, and so instead of a plain, boring looking bookshelf filled with books, you can decorate your walls with pieces of artwork that happen to store your books. Eureka!

Drapes: A Great Way to Enhance Your Home

Drapes are a great functional way to make your home look lovely, while giving you the chance to be original and creative. There are plenty of choices within the broad category of drapes, and the color, texture and fabric you choose must reflect your home and you.

The key to good interior decorating is to combine the functional with the ornamental. One great way to give any room a wonderful ambience is through using the right drapes. Drapes are not only an appropriate way to let your creativity loose, but also an essential part of any room.

Drapes are a great way to ensure privacy, as well as to control lighting, ensure insulation and to set the ambience of any room in your home. The best part is that you have a wide range to choose from, as far as material, design etc are concerned. No matter what the look you are going for is, you can find the right drapes for your home. And if you cannot find exactly what you are looking for, you can even take a chance and make them yourself, or have them custom-made.

There are mainly four kinds of drapes to choose from – vertical cloth drapes, shades, blinds and valances. Depending on the particular function you have in mind for the drapes and the theme of the room, you have plenty of choices within each kind.

The most popular kind is cloth drapes – they can give softness and warmth to the room that the other kinds cannot. You also have a lot of choice within this group. The first thing you have to consider is the size of the window – the smaller the window, the simpler the style is a rule of thumb. Drapes have to echo the function and feel of the room. The right drapes can enhance the ambience, but the wrong ones can ruin an otherwise well-designed room. The color of the drapes is very important, as well. If the rest of the room has bold prints or floral patterns, you might consider plain drapes, or the room might look like a doll’s house. Two patterns in a room can work, but more than two can make it look very mismatched.

The texture you want is another important factor. This also depends on the function of the room. Traditionally, bedrooms and living rooms have heavy curtains that look very luxurious, that can be pulled back to let in the sun. At times, you see half curtains beneath the drapes, which can be a good idea for living rooms – they can make the room seem very light and lovely, and give you the option of changing the look of the room completely very easily. Satin and velvet curtains are the last word for a luxurious look. Textured silk is a good choice, because it has a solid and thick feel to it. The most functional fabrics are cotton-based. Now there is so much choice that cotton-based drapes can look any way you want them to.

The kind of mechanism you choose for the curtain will depend on which style you use – tab curtains, inverted pleat, pinch pleat, café curtains – there are so many choices. It is up to you to choose the kind that works best for the look you want, while still being easy to maintain and clean.

Drapes reflect the character of your house and your own character, so you never have to stick to the tried and true. If you have interesting fabrics in wild and dark colors that reflect you as a person, never hesitate to take a chance. If the theme of the room is right, even geometrical patterns and ethnic designs, as well as beads, tassels and braids can look fantastic. Drapes are a great functional way to enhance your home as well as to be as creative as you like.

Area Rugs for Home Theaters

home theater More and more people these days are setting up home theaters—dedicated rooms designed to look, feel, and sound like real cinemas. With the advent of high-definition video and surround sound, it’s become easier to incorporate professional audio and video into one’s home. But one thing that continues to bother home theater owners is the flooring. Home theater floors need to specific properties to enhance the sound within the room. If your floors don’t support carpeting, or if you’re not up to the maintenance it entails, a good alternative is to shop for rugs instead.

Area rugs make a great alternative to carpets, not just because they’re cheaper but because they’re a lot easier to deal with. For one thing, they don’t need any complex installation—you just roll them out, pat them down and you’re good to go. And since many rugs are made of the same materials are carpets, you won’t be missing out on the sound quality either. The varied designs also allow you to match them with your existing décor. Not sure which piece to buy? Here’s a quick buying guide to help you out.

Look for good insulation.

Sound and temperature insulation should be your top priority when it comes to home theater rugs. You need a rug material that can absorb the sound so it doesn’t echo or bounce out of the room. Wool area rugs are the best choice for this purpose. Soft and luxurious yet perfectly durable, wool has been setting the standard for quality since the earliest days of rug manufacturing. These days, they’ve also been developed for soundproofing specifically in home theater floors.

To maximize the rug’s capacity, look for large pieces, but not large enough to cover the entire room (otherwise you might as well have gone with carpeting). The general rule is that there should be at least a foot and a half of bare floor on all sides of the rug. This helps maintain a sense of balance without affecting the rug’s insulating properties. Place it a few feet from the speakers or right in front of the screen for maximum soundproofing.

Choose a soft fabric.

One thing you may notice about theaters is that the floors are thickly carpeted. This is partly for insulation purposes, as mentioned above, but also to keep it comfortable underfoot. You can get the same effect with your rug by choosing soft, comfortable materials. Again, wool is your best choice for this purpose, but there are less expensive materials that are just as good. For example, the Anji Mountain Bamboo Co Black Bamboo Shag Rug offers the same luxurious feel but uses renewable bamboo, making it much less expensive and more sustainable.

Bamboo is often mixed with other materials to give it that softness, so keep a good eye on the materials added. The rug above is actually 20% cotton, so it’s still completely natural. If you want something more durable, consider getting a polypropylene rug—it’s just as soft and comfy, but it’s made from synthetic fibers so it can stand up better to regular use. This can be a good choice if you plan on using your home theater a lot or having friends over from time to time.

Pick a neutral color.

Colors are more important in home theater design than you might think. Experts recommend using neutral colors so that they don’t distract you from the screen, and so they don’t reflect the wrong light colors. For your rug, the best choice would be something on the darker side of the spectrum. Brown area rugs usually work well because they’re dark enough to be inconspicuous, but still add a nice warm glow to the room.

Your rug color should also match the décor for the rest of the room. Many designers use rugs to tie several décor elements together and give the room a crisp, finished look. For example, if you have blue upholstery, a dark blue rug would match it perfectly. You can even choose one with a pattern to give it some visual interest, as long as it’s in balance with the rest of your space.

Keep an eye on quality.

Many new rug materials have been introduced over the years, but not all of them live up to the hype. If you want your rug to last more than a few months, take your time to get to know the brands and know which ones are worth your money. Stick to those that have been around for a few years and have a good following. Dynamic Rugs, established in 1994, offers a wide range of styles, designs, colors and patterns, all of them extremely sturdy for their price. If you’re not familiar with rug brands, look them up on decorating forums or read rug decorating blogs to get some firsthand tips.

Complete Your Southwestern Theme with Area Rugs

Country, modern, industrial, vintage, Victorian—there’s no shortage of options when it comes to home design themes. But one of the most enduring yet overlooked styles is southwestern décor. Characterized by sunset colors and images of the outdoors, southwestern homes evoke memories of simple yet comfortable living—the thematic opposite of many modern styles. And the best thing about it is that it’s easy to implement in any space, regardless of size, design or budget. You can turn your home into a southwestern haven with just a few key accessories, such as area rugs.

Rugs play a central role in southwestern design, along with other room fabrics like curtains and pillow covers. Today’s area rugs make it even easier to work into different themes, as they offer lots of variety in color, pattern, style and texture. And since they’re not permanent, you can move them around or mix them up until you find one that fits with your southwestern theme. No matter what your budget, lifestyle or personal tastes are, you’re sure to find the right southwestern rug. Here’s a quick buying guide to help you out.

Go for vibrant colors.

Southwestern colors are inspired by the colors of the desert and sunset. Red, yellow, orange, coral, and other warm colors often take center stage. But since these colors can be overpowering, modern designers use cooler like green, purple, and turquoise to balance it out. A good southwestern color scheme should have take one or two from both sides, with one as the primary color and the other serving as an accent.

The same rules apply to southwestern area rugs. Take your main color and look for a rug that either matches or contrasts with it. If you’re going for turquoise walls, for example, a rug in bright orange or blazing red provides a bold yet stylish contrast. On the other hand, a purple or green rug will carry the “cool” color theme well and create a smoother, more seamless look. The latter usually works for smaller spaces, as it helps extend the line of view beyond the walls.

Choose simple geometric prints.

Some patterns are immediately associated with the southwestern look: diamond chains, cactus prints, simple stripes and gradients. But southwestern rugs come in numerous other prints, and all of them can work just as well in your home. It’s really a matter of what looks good with your other design elements. You may not even need a patterned piece; if you already have lots of prints in the room, you may be better off with a solid-colored rug.

You can also go for something simple, such as the Dynamic Rugs Serenity 1004 red area rug. Featuring thick stripes and a gradient design, it combines vibrant reds and oranges with more mellow cream and beige, yet still maintains a smooth, unified look. The simplicity of the pattern also makes it suitable for contemporary homes that need a warm southwestern touch. Put it somewhere visible, such as a hallway or the middle of the living room, where the colors can be equally appreciated.

Stick to natural materials.

Southwestern décor is much like the country theme in that both lean heavily towards simple, natural materials. Wood and rattan are especially favored in southwestern homes, as they provide a sense of stability and structure while keeping with the home’s warm, welcoming feel. For your area rug, choose a natural fiber such as bamboo, jute or seagrass. Wool and cotton also work well, especially if you have plain wood floors that could use a bit of softness.

If your home gets a lot of foot traffic, consider investing in sisal area rugs. Sisal comes from the fibers of the agave plant, a type of cactus native to Mexico, Brazil and Africa. It’s the same material used for dartboards and heavy twine. Sisal rugs are extremely hard-wearing and require little to no chemical treatment, so they’re very environmentally friendly. They also have a smooth, sleek look that contrasts nicely with the soft surfaces commonly seen in southwestern homes.

Look for unique shapes and sizes.

Rectangular rugs may be traditional, but they’re definitely not your only choice. In fact, shaped rugs are practically tailor-made for southwestern décor: with their soft curves and subtle appeal, they make the perfect complement to the strong colors and patterns in the rest of the room. Some of the most popular shapes for southwestern rugs are round, oval, and octagonal.

Oval braided area rugs fit particularly well into the theme because of their bright color combinations. Often associated with country décor, braided rugs have a light, casual look that nevertheless grabs attention and brightens up the room. You can use them in doorways as a welcome mat, by your furniture, or in front of the fireplace where it can serve as a focal point.

Area Rugs for a Greener Home

Carpets are coming back in fashion as a way to pad up one’s floors without losing style or aesthetic. But many people are hesitant because of the environmental impact often associated with them. It’s no secret that a lot of work, energy and raw material go into carpet production. And in this age of environmental consciousness, it’s not exactly the greenest choice. Thankfully, there’s an efficient alternative: area rugs. By shopping for rugs instead, you reduce your carbon footprint, warm up your home, and keep it in style for years to come.

But what really makes rugs a greener choice? For one thing, they come in a wider range of materials, so you have more control over how natural or organic your rug is. Second, they’re also cheaper—while there are some luxury carpets out there, you can usually find a decent piece for under $100. And since they’re smaller, they’re also a lot easier to maintain—no need to take them to the dry cleaners or spend days waiting for them to dry. To help you find the greenest rugs, here’s a quick buying guide worth looking into.

Know your natural materials.

The word “natural” can mean a lot. In many states, a rug only has to have a pinch of natural fiber for it to earn the label. That’s why you should check the tags carefully before buying. Choose only materials that come from all-natural sources, such as wool. Wool can last for years without any chemical treatments. If you’re on a budget, look into braided wool rugs—they’re made from lighter wool and won’t cost you as much as a regular rug would.

Another good reason to choose wool is that the production process is very eco-friendly. Wool production is very stable worldwide, since sheep have to be sheared regularly to keep them comfortable in hotter seasons. The process doesn’t hurt the animal, and the fur grows back fast. And since sheepskin has natural protective abilities, wool rugs can remain soft and durable over the years, even with very little maintenance.

Consider plant-based fibers.

Some people don’t approve of animal skins because they take a fair amount of energy to produce. If you want to further reduce your environmental footprint, you can choose plant-based materials such as bamboo and seagrass. Bamboo is especially popular because it grows abundantly and can be treated without using synthetics. You can even get the same softness and quality as wool, as with Anji Mountain bamboo shag rugs. This company gets its bamboo from the well-preserved Anji Mountains of China, where the cold climate toughens up the fibers and the shoots grow up to a hundred feet a year.

Bamboo isn’t the only plant fiber you can use, of course. Designers are also discovering a number of indigenous plants that fit very well into rug design. Jute and mountain grass, for example, create a very smooth, subtle material that’s surprisingly durable for their price. Look around and compare different fibers to see which ones best suit your needs.

Keep an eye on quality.

Most people associate eco-friendly with low quality, but that’s not always the case. Sure, going natural may mean giving up treatments that would make rugs last longer. But it really depends on the materials you use in the first place. There are lots of natural materials that last just as long as their synthetic counterparts. Sisal area rugs are a good example. Made from a type of cactus known as agave, sisal fiber is used for industrial ropes, dart boards, and other heavy-duty items that can withstand regular abuse.

Knowing your sources can also help you ensure lasting quality from your area rug. There are literally thousands of rug manufacturers out there, but not all of them will give you good value for your money. Ask around for recommendations on good shops, brands, and manufacturers, and make sure to compare your sources before making your purchase.

Buy locally.

Finally, as much as possible, try to limit your purchase to local manufacturers and dealers. Besides supporting local industry, it also reduces your rug’s total carbon footprint because it doesn’t have to travel far to reach your home. Most states have at least a few rug manufacturers offering online and offline sales. Consult a forum or blog on area rug decorating to see what people in your area recommend.

Another advantage to buying locally is that you can always come back if you need after-sales assistance. For example, if you want the rug replaced under warranty, it’s easier to just drive to the store than have to call or write an email, where you may have to wait days for a reply. You can also get personalized tips on cleaning, maintenance and design. And if you decide to change or add more rugs in the future, you’ll know where to go to get the best deals.

How to Decorate with a Round Rug

You have a stunningly gorgeous round area rug. The rug is beautiful. The details and patterns match your room décor flawlessly. Not what do you do with it?

If you attempt to utilize a circular rug in the same manner you might use a traditional rectangular rug, you will learn very quickly that it just doesn’t look right. Your not sure why. You just know that it is not quite right.

When using a round rug in areas where there are multiple pieces of different types of furniture such as a living area, use circular placement patterns. Place the coffee table, or coffee table grouping, in the center of the rug. Position all subsequent furniture around the rug and table in equal distances. This circular pattern makes for great conversational areas by creating a space where everyone faces and can see everyone else in the group.

Round rugs can also be used in spaces like dining rooms where there is only one key piece of furniture – the table. Fairly easy, just place the circular rug, centered, directly below the table. You do not need a circular dining room table, or even a square table, to make the round rug work. As long as the rug is larger than the table’s longest length, a circular rug will work under a rectangular dining room table. This will work best in dining rooms with out any other miscellaneous furniture in the room.

Another great and inventive way to use the round rug is in an area with a single piece of furniture like a reading chair. Place the chair to one edge of the circular rug to make a statement. In this particular case, make the rug and the furniture opposite. So, if you have a very plain, solid white chair, pair it with a loud, brightly colored rug. This arrangement works well in front of windows that you wish to be the focal point in the room or in large bedrooms where you are looking to break up the space.

One of the wonderful uses for the circular rug, is to break up monotonous square spaces typical to apartments and new homes being built better known as the “white box.” By using the round rug in these spaces, you are able to create more fluid movement in the room without having to actually perform any construction to the architectural space.

If you choose to use the round rug in your space, use circular shapes through out that space that mimic your rug. A rhythm will flow in the area giving the room a complete and well thought out look. Consider using modern artwork with circular shapes and movement (you could even paint this yourself). Circular tables, chairs, pillows, wall covering patterns, lamps…etc. are all details that can help you finalize the circular rhythm.

So do not shy away from purchasing that stunningly gorgeous round rug in the store window because you are afraid that you will be unable to make it work. Just keep it simple, circles to circles, squares to squares, and you are definitely not a square. Be daring. Go round.

Using A Contemporary Rug For A New Look

Area rugs are becoming more and more popular, especially with the contemporary design. Contemporary area rugs will give you that punch of pazzaz you feel you need in a rooms completion. There are many different patterns, colors, sizes, and designs to choose from for contemporary area rugs so there is always one for most everyone’s room in their home. Many times area rugs will give a different appearance after it is taken out of the store and placed on your floor so make sure you know what you’re shopping for.

To give yourself a boost in the contemporary look you may want to consider searching online or going through home magazines to give yourselves ideas and make sure the creativity is brought into your room properly. You want to avoid a design disaster!

The bolder the better in most cases with contemporary area rug choices. You want to make them stand out as the focal point in a rooms design. You also want to avoid making the room too busy with too many patterns. Such as having a patterned wall choice with a pattern rug, it’s a no, no! If you’re starting out with a basic wall paint, you’ll have more choices and options when it comes time to choose a great contemporary area rug.

If you’re scared to choose a pattern or a bold statement area rug then try going with a basic plain area rug. This will give you more options as well if you are tired of the look in one room. The area rug is easier to bring into another design throughout the home to give that room a different look without having to purchase a new area rug.

When choosing an area rug you want to make sure it is functional. You don’t want to have an area rug where you’re scared it will get ruined within a few times someone walks on top of it. Try searching for a braided area rug which will give you a longer life span rather than a nice loop rug, especially if you have animals!

Mixing and matching area rugs is a great idea if you know what you’re doing. You also can experiment with different size area rugs if it is a larger room which you are decorating. The great thing about area rugs is if it doesn’t work, pick it up and try again!

How to Properly Clean Your Rugs and Carpet

If you have different kinds of rugs at home and/or wall-to-wall carpeting, this is the perfect article for you. Below is the breakdown of cleaning styles suitable for specific types of rugs, as well as carpeting.

Carpeting is usually made of synthetic materials. Regular cleaning can be as simple as vacuuming, but for a more thorough clean, you can steam or shampoo your carpet. Intensive cleaning is recommended twice a year to put the mites, moss or germs at bay, especially under the carpet. We normally just get to clean the surface, so cleaning the carpet inside and out ensures a clean environment for your home. There are cleaning solutions made for carpets. Investing in these products will also help you get the maximum cleaning results for your carpeting.

For cotton-made and light rugs, such as rag rugs, braided rugs and some synthetic area rugs, a wash and dry technique will do. You don’t need special cleaning products either. A regular detergent can do the work of making your rugs look brand new. Just be careful with using bleaching solutions as these can ruin the color of the fabrics.

Rag rugs can be machine-dried but it can cause the rug to shrink. No worries though. After the first wash and dry, rag rugs do hold their shape for a long time. Only time can now shrink and wear them.

Wool area rugs are high quality rugs that cannot just be tossed in a washer. Careful cleaning is required to maintain their quality. Wool is a soft material and a strong cleaning solution, scrubbing and water can destroy it. Wool rugs are often brought to the cleaners for proper maintenance. They are cleaned with a solvent commonly used in dry cleaning, with special machines and all.

Finally, bathroom rugs may be busy fellows in safeguarding us from slipping accidents and our floor from the water drips from our showers, but they also need a break once in a while. The rug’s exposure to wet surface makes it an easy target for bacteria. Wash a bathroom rug with hot water and detergent. However, do not machine-dry it to preserve the rubber backing. Just let it dry naturally.

Luxury Rugs

Every handmade rug has its own story, which is beautifully woven into it by the skilled hands of an experienced craftsman. These luxury rugs are handmade, and every yarn is carefully drawn in to create a beautiful story. Their rich and vibrant colors, soft, warm texture and intricate patterns make them functional pieces of art. Many of these luxury area rugs originate from India, Pakistan, China, Tibet and several other countries where fine weaving is an ancient art.

Handmade rugs are indeed exceptional works of art; each one is made up of thousands of knots that are joined by a skillful weaver. Based on the number of knots tied per square inch, it can take few months to over a year to weave each one of these creations. Handmade pieces are much more expensive than their machine-made counterparts as a great deal of skill and knowledge goes into their making.

There are various types of rugs available in the market. You can find machine-made rugs, modern, contemporary, traditional, natural fiber, hide rugs and so on, but none can match the fine craftsmanship and excellence of those that are handmade. They are truly unique.

Some of the different types of luxury area rugs include:

Hand-Knotted Rugs -The creation of a hand-knotted masterpiece requires endless patience and a lot of hard work by a team of skilled, committed craftspeople. These rugs have warps that are cotton strings tied on a frame – these become the foundation of each piece. Each tuft is created by looping pile yarns which are usually made of wool or silk around the warp and then placed one by one onto the rug. It can sometimes take over a year to weave a large hand knotted creation, but the end result is outstanding in luxurious beauty and intricacy.

Hand-Tufted Rugs – This method involves stretching cotton canvas on a frame and pushing pile yarns through the canvas by using a hooking tool, which is then cut to form a tuft. Because there are no knots, a rug similar in look and feel to those that are hand-knotted can be created at a fraction of the time and cost. Usually hand-tufted rugs do not have fringes and are normally less expensive than their hand-knotted counterparts and offer great value to the buyer.

Flat-Woven Rugs - These are woven on a base similar to hand knotted rugs. Cotton warps are strung on a frame. But instead of looping the pile around in knots, they are threaded back and forth to create a flat pile. By and large, flat weaves are usually used to create highly flexible floor coverings and tapestries. They are the quickest and the least expensive hand made rugs to manufacture. Most of them are reversible, which increases their life span.

Owning a luxury rug means giving homage to an ancient art. Because of their intricate designs, extraordinary colors and unequalled quality, these pieces are highly prized. They are the very finest area rugs that one can own. Luxury area rugs are often referred to as heirloom quality. Good care should be provided to a luxury rug for it to be able to retain its glow for generations.

Negative Ions: One Of The Many Benefits Of Owning Bronze Water Fountains

Many people today are strongly considering indoor wall mounted fountains or wall water fountains for their home or office décor, because they are beautiful but also because they provide some excellent health benefits. Indoor indoor water fountains are beneficial to you and anyone who comes into contact with them. These types of water fountains have the ability to enhance the appearance of any space while being extremely stylish and attractive.

Think back to a time when you may have been in the presence of a waterfall or along the seashore or while you were tracking through the countryside in the good fresh air. Negative ions create this amazing sensation. Negative ions are not really ions, but rather negatively charged oxygen atoms surrounded by ambient water molecules, broken down with sun light. Anytime you are in a natural setting you will notice that you feel so much better. Conversely, spending too much time in metropolitan or otherwise urban areas may deprive you of these crucial negative ions and thus the quality of your air suffers.

You may understand that negative ions do wonders for your health, but you may be wondering how to make a difference. Obviously, not everyone lives near a rushing river, waterfall, or coastal setting. However, you can experience these same sensations with the use of indoor bronze water fountains and wall water fountains and restore some influential negative ions into your office or home. As the water cascades towards the basin, it will actually rupture complex molecules in simple negative oxygen ions and once those attract stray water molecules negative ions are formed. Using indoor indoor water fountains can help you out by introducing negative ions directly into your home. Now, these fountains will obviously never be as good as a massive, natural waterfall (as these generate far more negative ions per second, on account of sheer water output), but they will certainly allow you to make a significant difference in the air quality of your home or office.

You can create a multitude of health benefits by using indoor copper wall fountains to create negative ions. Studies have shown that these indoor fountains can offer you a positive effect in the serotonin levels in the brain. When you suffer from depression, anxiety or seasonal affective disorder you can give your own self a healthy boost. Using such a fountain can help you maintain your good moods while the months are dark. Negative ions have a way of bonding to the unhealthy particles in the atmosphere, overcome them, and make them neutral.

When you are looking for the best way to cleanse your office or home area or if you are trying to find something that is appealing to the eye to infuse the area with good energy you should find out more. Invest some of your time looking at some indoor wall water fountains that can offer you a multitude of health benefits.

Getting The Best Out Of Using Stencil Designs

Interesting and exciting patterns can be created with the use of one or more stencils, just follow our basic steps:

Use a quality template

Stencil design you are buying must be quality and from a reputable seller.

Read their feedback from previous customers. Having the stencil design soak through with paint in the middle of the masterpiece would be highly annoying. Likewise, not knowing the order in which to paint multi-layer stencil designs could lead to a disaster. So instructions, and a picture of the finished work, are essential on all but the easiest stencil designs.

Use the proper tools

Apply stencil paint using either a brush, sponge or a roller. Select a soft but stiff, round brush for stencilling and apply the paint carefully avoiding a build up of excess paint at the edge of the stencil design, else you will find the paint creeping under and ruining the effect.

If the stencil design requires the use of multiple colours, consider the use of an applicator per colour rather than trying to wash it in between each colour. Washing the brush or sponge will only lead to water being carried onto the paint, which could result in a run.

Use the correct technique

If you want to avoid paint being dragged under the stencil design, always start your stroke at the edge of the stencil design and work towards the centre. Thus paint is being pulled away from the actual stencil design, rather than dragged towards it. The paint should be applied in thin layers, allowing each to dry between applications, if required. Again, overuse of paint is risking allowing the paint to run under the stencil design and spoil the effect.

Don't move the stencil

Tape the stencil design in place firmly, but using a suitable easy to remove adhesive tape that won't damage the areas already painted. And if you are taping an area that has already been painted, make sure it is well dry and firm!

Clean the stencil before moving on

When you are using the stencil design once on a job isn't sufficient, then ensure that it is properly cleaned before repositioning it ready for the next use. Any unused paint might just run off onto the next part of the pattern and look unsightly, spoiling the beautiful stencil effect.

And do not forget that you can always find a great assortment of stencil designs to choose from. From aquatic, to Fairy Tale to out of this world space themes. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy your stencilling effects!
